ABOUT THE POSITION: This position plays a key role in leading conservation research and scientific analysis to support the care and management of Museum Victoria's collections. It involves conducting materials characterization, hazard identification, and preservation-focused research to ensure the long-term stability, safety, and accessibility of the collection. The role also contributes to developing strategies that enhance collection development, public access, and ongoing conservation practices. Some of the key duties include: * Initiating, developing, and managing conservation research projects and performing advanced technical analysis of collection materials using specialised analytical equipment. * Undertaking applied research to improve materials analysis techniques and their relevance to the preservation and access needs of the collections. * Interpreting and communicating analytical results to curators, conservators, and other stakeholders, including guidance on hazard management and preservation strategies. * Maintaining data integrity and standardising analytical protocols and procedures. * Managing the laboratory's equipment, systems, records, and administration in alignment with museum standards. * Contributing to the planning and management of resources, facilities, and budgets within the conservation science team. * Adhering to organisational policies, safety standards, and legislative requirements, including handling hazardous materials in controlled environments. The successful applicant will have: * Specialist training in and demonstrated experience with a range of analytical equipment and techniques relevant to cultural heritage materials. * Extensive experience in hazard identification and materials characterisation within museum or heritage collections. * Deep understanding of current national and international conservation science principles, ethics, and research relevant to multidisciplinary collections. * Specialist knowledge of chemical hygiene, laboratory safety, and compliance with safe work practices. * Strong organisational and project management abilities with proven capability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines. * Proficiency in maintaining accurate documentation using electronic databases and museum record systems. * Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present scientific information clearly and strategically to diverse audiences. * Willingness to undergo a National Police Records Check as a condition of employment.
