The company operates in Australia, the USA, Philippines, and Vietnam.Austal is delivering multiple naval shipbuilding and sustainment programs for the Royal Australian Navy, Australian Border Force, and the Department of Defence, employing approximately 1,000 people in facilities in located Western Australia, Queensland, and the Northern Territory.Austal has entered into a landmark Strategic Shipbuilding Agreement (SSA) with the Commonwealth of Australia, launching a new era of continuous naval shipbuilding within the Henderson Defence Precinct and across Western Australia.
As Australia's Strategic Shipbuilder, Austal will start by delivering eighteen Landing Craft Medium and eight Landing Craft Heavy vessels for the Australian Army.The SSA will drive significant growth across our industry and workforce, as we deliver existing and future programs under a long-term partnership.
Through effective collaboration with our supply chain partners, Austal is driving innovation, developing sovereign capability, and creating lasting opportunities for Australian industry and workers.To support this growth, we are building a highly skilled team to engage with local industry and supply chains, and contribute to complex, large-scale projects that reflect Austal's proven capabilities and trusted performance.About the OpportunityThe Maintenance Engineer ensures maritime systems remain supportable, available, and cost-effective across their lifecycle by developing maintenance strategies and analysis, integrating requirements into design and sustainment planning, and collaborating with ILS and design teams.
The role operates under the supervision of the ILS Lead and is accountable to the Integrated Product Support Engineering Manager within the shipbuilding program.What's InvolvedMaintenance Documentation Development: Create clear, detailed maintenance plans defining resources, levels, frequency, and work hoursTraceability: Link documentation to RCM, FMECA, and LORA methodologies to optimize lifecycle costs and maximize availabilityMaintenance Task Analysis: Ensure tasks, resources, procedures, and personnel competencies are fit for purpose and traceableIPS Collaboration: Align maintenance engineering with other ILS Program elements for integrated support solutionsDesign Interface Integration: Embed maintenance requirements into ship design to ensure maintainability and supportabilityFuture Planning: Address growth, obsolescence, and technology refresh/insertion in maintenance strategiesIssue Resolution: Manage engineering changes, obsolescence, and reliability issues efficiently to maintain operational effectivenessStakeholder Consultation: Capture input from internal and external stakeholders; align outputs with other IPS disciplinesCompliance and Assurance: Ensure activities meet Defence standards, enterprise policies, and contractual obligationsData Management and Reporting: Accurately capture, analyze, and report maintenance dataAustralian citizenship required; must be able to obtain a Baseline Government Security Clearance.Bachelor's degree in mechanical, Electrical, Systems, or related engineering discipline.3â5 years in maintenance engineering within complex asset environments.Skilled in developing maintenance documentation (procedures, schedules, plans); familiar with safety standards, systems engineering lifecycle, design integration, and logistic support analysis.Strong communication and collaboration abilities, with proven effectiveness in multidisciplinary environments.Postgraduate qualifications in Systems Engineering, Asset Management, or Defence Logistics.Proficiency in RCM, FMECA, LORA, and other maintenance analysis techniquesExperience in Defence Acquisition / ILS or IPS ProgramKnowledge of Australian Standards for Defence Contracting (ASDEFCON)Experience with Defence Land / Naval Systems maintenance documentationKnowledge of Defence maintenance data systems and standards.Experience with participation in design reviewsWhy AustalCompetitive compensation and benefits package.Professional development and training opportunities.A supportive and dynamic work environment.Opportunities for career advancement within our growing organisation.Our global team is guided by a universal set of values that describe the focus of our efforts.
