The ABS is looking to recruit several Workforce Supervisors to manage teams of Census Response Coding Officers.
About the opportunity
The Census of Population and Housing is one of Australia's most important national projects. Conducted every five years, it helps government, communities, and organisations understand how Australians live - shaping decisions on services, funding, planning, and future policy.
The Census Data Coding team ensures that every response, whether submitted online or on paper, is carefully processed and accurately recorded.
This role is an excellent opportunity for you to use your well-developed people management skills in a dynamic operational Australian Public Service environment. You'll be part of a supportive team, learning new skills and contributing to a project that benefits every community in Australia.
What you will do
As a Workforce Supervisor managing Response Coding Officers, you'll help ensure the quality and accuracy of Census data. You will work in a busy, task-focused environment where accuracy and meeting timeframes are key. Full training is provided, and you'll be supported throughout the project.
As a Census Workforce Supervisor, you will:
* supervise and manage a team, clearly communicating work progress, issues, and key decisions
* allocate and monitor workloads to ensure Census targets and objectives are met
* provide technical and procedural support to Census office staff
* resolve or escalate complex queries and operational issues
* undertake performance management and coaching of staff when required
* coordinate training development and deliver face-to-face training sessions
* monitor operational intelligence and implement process improvements
* ensure confidentiality and security of Census information and materials
* manage responses to incidents and crises, including WHS reporting
* undertake a combination of procedural, operational, and administrative duties.
The staff you will be supervising review and interpret Census answers, following approved guidelines and exercising good judgment to correctly place each response into the right statistical category, geographic area and family or household type. All tasks are computer based and require people to work both independently and as part of a team to deliver quality data within tight deadlines.
What we are looking for
We're looking for people who can demonstrate the following:
Essential Skills
* leadership skills to manage a team of approximately 20 staff
* strong organisational and time management skills to allocate and monitor workloads
* ability to foster a high-performance, inclusive team culture
* good judgement in resolving day-to-day operational issues and escalating complex matters
* effective communication and people skills for team coordination and coaching
* ability to learn and use office systems quickly.
Highly Desirable
* experience in recruitment and performance management
* training and coaching experience
* coordination or workforce scheduling experience.
