Role
Leading teachers will be highly skilled classroom practitioners and undertake leadership and management roles commensurate with their salary range. The role of leading teachers is to improve the skill, knowledge and performance of the teaching workforce in a school or group of schools and to improve the curriculum program of a school.
Typically, leading teachers are responsible for coordinating a number of staff to achieve improvements in teaching and learning which may involve the coordination and professional support of colleagues through modelling, collaborating and coaching and using processes that develop knowledge, practice and professional engagement in others.
Leading teachers are expected to lead and manage a significant area or function within the school with a high degree of independence to ensure the effective development, provision and evaluation of the school's education program.
Leading teachers will be expected to make a significant contribution to policy development relating to teaching and learning in the school. A leading teacher has a direct impact and influence on the achievement of the school goals.
Leading teachers are usually responsible for the implementation of one or more priorities contained in the school strategic plan.
Responsibilities
LEADING TEACHER - YEAR 7 LEVEL LEADER
The Year Level Leader will be a highly skilled classroom practitioner who undertakes leadership and management roles to improve the skill, knowledge and performance of the teaching workforce. The Year Level Leader is expected to lead and manage a Year Level Student Management and Wellbeing programs within the college with a high degree of independence to ensure the effective development, provision and evaluation of the college’s education program. The Year Level Leader will be expected to make a significant contribution to policy development relating to teaching and learning in the college.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Year Level Leader reports directly to the Principal Team. Area of responsibility and accountability: Year level student management/wellbeing/oversee whole of Year level activities;
1. Leading and managing the implementation of whole-college improvement initiatives related to the college strategic plan and college priorities
2. Leading and managing the provision of professional learning and developing individual and team performance and development plans for teaching staff within the priorities of the college and managing staff performance and development (review of staff)
3. Leading and managing the implementation of the college operations and policies relating to student welfare and discipline (bullying, harassment, mobile, uniform)
4. Lead the achievement of year level targets around accountability (attendance, uniform etc)
5. Contributing to the overall leadership and management of the college and the development of proposals for college council considerations
6. Effectively manage resources, including budgets and the ordering processes
7. Assist Community Hub staff with external Alternate Education Applications (DOXA, BFLO)
8. Assist Assistant Principal – Community and the Diversity and DIP Leader with complex cases (Learning Places Connect/ BSIM)
9. Providing a child safe environment in accordance with child safe standards
10. Developing and managing the college code of conduct
11. Supporting and collaborating with Assistant Principals, Heads of Curriculum, Year Level Coordinator, Learning Specialist Team and Engagement Advisors on implementing the BSE college

12. Other duties as directed by the Principal.
MEETINGS/ASSEMBLIES:
13. Meet weekly with Deputy Year Level Leaders and Engagement Advisor to monitor progress towards set goals of student engagement, attendance and wellbeing
14. Attend SSG meetings for DIP and OoHC students each term
15. Plan, lead and deliver the Year Level Assembly weekly, with a strong focus on celebrating student achievement, promoting student engagement and supporting student voice & leadership
16. Conduct Wellbeing Meetings with Year level team for Student Wellbeing and Engagement (per term planner)
17. Attend BSIM meetings for students in allocated Year Level
18. Attend Year Level information nights, excursions, camps and other events
BEHAVIOURAL:
19. Responsibility for general discipline matters beyond the management of classroom teachers for suspension level behaviours.
20. Liaise with Principal for suspension recommendations (including paperwork)
21. Supervise internal suspensions and Exit Duty for the year level.
22. Coordinate and facilitate return to college meetings, including developing Behaviour Support Plan, safety plan and incremental attendance plans (DIP leader to create IEP for these students)
23. Follow up exits and mediate a restorative conversation before return to class.
PLANNING:
24. Collaborate with Wellbeing staff to develop wellbeing/GA curriculum
25. Plan and develop Scope and Sequence for Group Advisor sessions to observe teaching practice, student learning behaviours and application of the wellbeing curriculum.
26. Manage student transition and promotion between year levels (including orientation along with Transition Facilitators) – Year 7 and 10
27. Plan, communicate and facilitate Day One Conferences with GAs for your year level
28. Plan, communicate, facilitate, attend camp for Year level along with administrative support (Year 7 & 9)
29. Plan for and facilitate the Student Leadership Process/Induction (Year 9)
30. Work with Communications/Promotions Manager to organise/oversee and promote year level events
ATTENDANCE:
31. Monitor student attendance & follow up students between 40-60%
KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS:
32. Improvement in NAPLAN – Benchmark Growth for reading, writing and numeracy (Priority Cohort, Top 2 bands, Gender)
33. Improvement in Teacher Judgements – Age expected level
34. Improvement in Student Attitudes to College Survey results for stimulated learning, differentiated learning challenge, sense of confidence.
35. Improvement in College Staff Survey results for leadership, academic emphasis, collective efficacy, moderate assessment tasks, understand analyse data & seek feedback to improve practice
36. Improvement in Parent/carer Opinion Survey results for student motivation and support, confidence & resiliency skills, positive transitions
37. Reduce the percentage of students with 20+ days absent to 30%. Reduce the percentage of equity funded students with 20+ days absent to 47%
38. Increase the percentage of student retention Year 7 to Year 10 to 85%
39. Leading professional learning sessions and leading change and coaching teachers to improve their instructional practice
Who May Apply
Teachers currently registered or eligible for registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching and qualified to teach and/or have demonstrated experience in the curriculum area(s) specified for the position.

VIT LANTITE
To be eligible for employment, transfer or promotion in the principal or teacher class a person must have provisional or full registration from the Victorian Institute of Teaching. In addition, from 3 August 2020, to be eligible for employment in the principal class or teacher class, a person who graduated from a Victorian Initial Teacher Education program after 1 July 2016, must demonstrate that they have passed the literacy and numeracy test for initial teacher education (LANTITE) requirements. This condition is satisfied where the LANTITE requirement is part of the Victorian Initial Teacher Education program completed by the person.

Bendigo South East College is a 7-10 secondary school in regional Victoria.
The College encourages the pursuit of excellence by all members of our learning community. A comprehensive, curriculum is offered to all students based on the Victorian F-10 Framework. Students at Years 8, 9 and 10 have some choice in their subject selections, including specialisms in sports (ADP) and the arts (ACA) and at Year 10, VCE and VET subjects.

The College is one of a cluster of similar schools in the Bendigo area. The College works closely with its associate primary schools to achieve a smooth transition from Year 6 to Year 7, and with Bendigo Senior Secondary College, for students making the transition from Year 10 to Year 11.
