Federal Government department is seeking a talented and creative media professional to undertake media and communication activities to raise awareness of the Departments agenda.

Reporting to the Media Manager, the APS 6 Media Officer will liaise with key stakeholders to develop media engagement materials including media messaging, social media content, issues management advice and event briefing materials.
You will build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders - including portfolio ministerial officers and senior departmental staff - to achieve positive outcomes within the media. You will support a range of daily activities including assessing the media environment and providing requisite advice on emerging issues.
This is initially a 6 to 12 month non-ongoing contract, with S26 transfers a possibility. Central Canberra location, with flexibility to work from home 2 days per week.

**Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities**:
- Drafting media releases and talking points.
- Developing and coordinating media enquiry responses.
- Preparing and coordinating event briefing materials
- Identifying opportunities and developing media engagement strategies.
- Media monitoring and production of media analysis reports.
- Coordinating fact checking and clearance of communications products.
- Participating in an after-hours on-call roster as required.
- Developing social media content.
- Coordinating access to transcripts, media clips and other media monitoring services, including training, for departmental and ministerial staff.
- Developing relationships with external stakeholders including state and territory governments, portfolio agencies and private sector organisations.
**Your experience may come from a background in journalism, media engagement or ministerial briefing, or you may come from working in a political office or APS media team, but important is an understanding of media and the news landscape.**
**Skills and Experience required**:
- A degree in communications or related discipline or minimum 3 years experience as a journalist or delivering in communications teams
- Strong written communication skills, with the ability to write clearly and succinctly and with strong attention-to-detail when drafting products in a variety of styles
- The ability to manage competing priorities and deliver results in a fast-paced environment
- Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders at all levels
- Collaborative mindset and ability to support and contribute to a strong team culture
- Australian Citizenship and ability to obtain a Baseline security clearance
