Overview
This is a permanent full-time position commencing Term 2, 2026. South Hedland Primary School (PS) is an Independent Public School with a diverse student population of approximately 240 students, 56% identifying as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. The school prioritises a caring, supportive learning environment built on positive relationships and strong school–community connections.
Our educational focus is on literacy, numeracy, attendance and behaviour. We deliver high-quality teaching through the Explicit Direct Instruction model and promote positive student conduct via the Positive Behaviour Support framework. Students access specialist programs in Visual Arts, Physical Education, Health, Technologies, Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) and Science. A School-Based Attendance Officer supports regular attendance with proactive strategies alongside staff.
Pastoral care, collaboration through weekly Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), and differentiation in teaching and learning are central to our approach. Formal literacy intervention programs operate daily for targeted support.

The Role
The successful applicant will ideally lead and support the consistent use of evidence-based teaching practices to improve student outcomes. They should champion high‐impact strategies, working closely with teachers to embed these approaches across the school. Using strong data literacy, they will drive decision‐making, monitor progress, and identify areas for targeted intervention.
Building teacher capability will be central to the role. Through coaching, mentoring and performance development, the Deputy Principal will empower staff to refine their practice and foster a culture of continuous improvement. A thorough understanding of the Western Australian Curriculum is desired to guide its effective implementation in all learning areas.
The Deputy Principal should also contribute to operational management, planning and whole‐school initiatives, ensuring processes are collaborative, well‐organised and aligned with school priorities. They will promote a safe, supportive and inclusive environment, modelling positive behaviour and wellbeing so every student feels valued and able to succeed.
Strong interpersonal skills are essential for building trust, fostering collaboration and maintaining positive relationships with staff, students, families and the wider community. The successful candidate should communicate with clarity and confidence, promoting a cohesive school culture.
This role requires resilience, adaptability and professional courage when leading change or navigating complexity. The Deputy Principal should exemplify calm, solution‐focused leadership and a proven ability to influence school‐wide practice to drive continuous improvement and high‐quality teaching and learning.
