Optus is an Australian telecommunications company, delivering more than 11 million services to our customers every day across mobile, broadband and digital solutions.
The Lead Engineer – Internet Network Infrastructure (Internet Network Infrastructure / Internet Interconnect) provides senior technical leadership across Optus' Internet‐facing routing, peering, and CDN interconnect platforms. The role is accountable for the end‐to‐end technical design and engineering of Internet connectivity, peering, and traffic exchange solutions that underpin customer Internet access, content delivery, and digital services.
The Lead Engineer combines strong architectural judgement with hands‐on engineering to design, validate, and implement complex routing and interconnect solutions, while ensuring platforms are resilient, scalable, secure, and aligned to Optus' broader Internet and network modernisation strategy. The role works closely with platform engineering, provisioning, operations, and external partners to translate technical designs into production‐ready, repeatable outcomes and to set clear engineering standards and practices across the Internet domain.
Your day to day will consist of
* Design and implement Internet routing, peering, and CDN interconnect solutions supporting Optus' Internet access and content delivery platforms.
* Own the technical design of Internet and CDN peering architectures, including routing policy, traffic engineering, resiliency, and failure‐domain considerations.
* Develop detailed low‐level designs, engineering documentation, and configuration artefacts to support consistent and high‐quality implementation.
* Engineer and validate routing and peering solutions across multi‐vendor environments (e.g. Cisco, Juniper, Nokia) in large‐scale service provider networks.
* Define and apply routing policy, BGP design, and traffic management strategies to optimise performance, availability, and customer experience.
* Configure and evolve automation capabilities (e.g. Ansible, NSO) to support consistent, repeatable implementation of Internet and peering solutions.
* Enable repeatable and scalable rollout of Internet and CDN peering solutions through clear documentation, automation, and effective handover to platform engineering and provisioning teams.
* Collaborate with internal stakeholders and external partners (CDNs, IXs, transit providers, vendors) to resolve design and integration challenges.
* Provide technical leadership and guidance during complex operational scenarios, major incidents, and solution reviews related to Internet and peering platforms.
* Contribute to the definition and maintenance of engineering standards, design patterns, and best practices for Internet Network Infrastructure.
What makes you perfect for the role
* Degree in Telecommunications Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related discipline.
* Experience designing and implementing Internet routing and peering solutions in large‐scale Telco or ISP environments.
* Strong expertise in IP and BGP‐based architectures, including Internet peering, transit, traffic engineering, and routing policy design.
* Proven experience working with Internet Exchanges, CDN providers, and content ecosystems in a service provider context.
* Deep hands‐on knowledge of routing platforms from vendors such as Cisco, Juniper, and Nokia in production environments.
* Practical experience with automation and network programmability using tools such as Ansible, NSO, or similar frameworks.
* Solid understanding of Internet resiliency, redundancy, and failure‐domain design, including high‐availability and scale considerations.
* Ability to produce clear, high‐quality technical documentation and communicate effectively with engineering peers, operations teams, vendors, and senior stakeholders.
* Strong engineering judgement, with the ability to balance technical depth, operational practicality, and business outcomes.
* Highly Desirable: Vendor certifications (Cisco, Juniper, Nokia), Python scripting, experience with large‐scale CDN interconnects, and exposure to emerging routing technologies.
