Position Information

Bourke is located in the Northwest region of NSW and is a historic outback town on the banks of the Darling River, famed for welcoming travellers. Bourke offers relaxation, heritage landmarks and a rich Indigenous culture, as well as outdoor adventure in nearby national parks.

Bourke High School has an enrolment of 124 students, with 86% identifying as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. The school is 370 km northwest of Dubbo and has well-maintained grounds with a focus on student wellbeing, community engagement and quality teaching and learning. The school emphasizes vocational education and training across all years. Its purpose is to provide a strong, inclusive academic and vocational curriculum while offering sporting, social and cultural opportunities for all.

Bourke High School is a Connected Community School, a strategy to improve educational outcomes for Aboriginal children and young people by positioning schools as community hubs that extend the influence of community and school leadership in services supporting children from birth through school into further training, study and employment.

Specific Selection Criteria

- Approval to teach Geography years 7–12 and willingness to teach Aboriginal Studies.
- Ability to work collaboratively with the faculty, the whole school, and the wider learning community to develop a culture of high expectations.
- Proven ability to differentiate curriculum and develop creative, engaging teaching and learning programs that cater for a diverse range of students, including low-socio-economic and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.
- An unconditional full approval to teach is required. If you do not hold a full approval to teach with the NSW Department of Education, you must commence the application process at the same time as you apply for this opportunity.
