Overview
Kick‐start your legal career in social justice. This maximum‐term position (0.8 FTE) commences in March 2026 and ends in October 2026. Salary is $73,926 (pro‐rata) plus super and generous salary packaging (up to $15,900 p.a.).
About the Program
This program honours the legacy of His Honour Steve Myall, Magistrate at Sunshine and Wyndham Courts, who contributed significantly to Melbourne's Western Suburbs with his humanity and commitment to therapeutic and social justice. The successful applicant will gain hands‐on experience and mentoring across various legal fields – criminal, family and civil law. Opportunities include:
* Observing court proceedings and tribunals
* Conducting legal research and working on client files
* Participating in client advice sessions
* Responding to client enquiries and providing information and referral services
* Exposing to administration: frontline triage, court clerking and reception duties
The role is based at our Sunshine office on Wurundjeri Country and you will be supported by a dedicated host and Regional Manager as part of a team of 50 lawyers, administrative staff and non‐legal advocates.
About You
* Law graduate with an interest in social justice and human rights
* Community‐minded, embodying values of fairness, care, courage and inclusion
* Diverse cultural or linguistic background, Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, or from a socio‐economically disadvantaged background
* Highly motivated, values‐driven and able to demonstrate commitment to the community and VLA's vision
* Eligible to commence a Practising Legal Training (PLT) in March 2026 (Students who have completed their PLT are ineligible)
