About Us

The Salvation Army is a Christian movement and one of Australia's largest and most-loved charities. We believe in doing good that transforms lives and futures for the better. It is this belief which drives us to find new ways and places where we can make a difference. From times of personal crisis to moments of national grief, we are always here — providing support, safety, community, and opportunity.

Why this role matters

As a Community Support Worker at The Open Door, you won’t just be offering practical support—you’ll be helping to rebuild lives. This role is at the heart of a deeply compassionate team that walks alongside individuals who face the harsh realities of homelessness and complex personal challenges. You’ll be the first to welcome them into a safe, supportive environment—one built on trust, dignity, and human connection. Your presence can be the turning point in someone’s journey, offering hope where it’s needed most and reminding every individual that they are seen, valued, and never alone.

About the role

This is your opportunity to play a vital part in creating a sense of home and belonging for individuals facing homelessness—through the Open Door program based in Flagstaff. You will meet clients' immediate needs with compassion, while empowering them to regain independence, reconnect with community, and rediscover hope through client-centred, strengths-based, and trauma-informed support.

Reporting to the Community Support Team Leader, this is a permanent, full-time position located in North Melbourne, Victoria.

The compensation is in accordance with SCHADS LEVEL 4.

How you will make an impact

* Support residents to build independence through daily living skills and meaningful group activities that foster wellbeing and connection.
* Connect clients with vital support services including mental health, AOD, and therapeutic care within and beyond The Salvation Army.
* Help create a safe, inclusive community by working closely with caseworkers and partners in a trauma-informed, respectful environment.
* Respond calmly to challenging situations, ensuring safety, accurate records, and clear communication with leadership.
* Be part of a compassionate team culture, sharing duties, mentoring new staff, and supporting the smooth running of the facility.

What you will bring

* Relevant tertiary qualifications in social work, community services, or related field.
* Experience and knowledge of the housing and homelessness sector (desirable).
* A National Criminal History Check.

What we offer

The Salvos offer eligible employees a well-balanced package of meaningful benefits including:

* Salary packaging up to $15,900 tax-free + $2,650 meal entertainment benefit.
* Generous Paid Parental leave for primary (12 weeks) & secondary carers, Purchased Leave Scheme (up to 8 weeks), and 5 days paid leave per year to experience working in other TSA programs or activities.
* Flexible working arrangements.
* Access to EAP and health & wellness initiatives, including Fitness Passport.
* Ongoing training and development opportunities to enhance on-the-job skills and proficiency.
* Rewarding and fulfilling purpose-driven careers that have positive and sustainable social impacts.

How to apply

If you are ready to make a difference and help individuals rebuild their lives, please submit your resume and cover letter detailing your alignment with the role's requirements. Together, we can create lasting change and build a more inclusive and compassionate community.

The Salvation Army is an Equal Opportunity Employer that provides an inclusive work environment and embraces the diverse talents of its people. The Salvation Army is a child-safe organization and is committed to protecting children and young people from harm. All child-facing roles will require the successful completion of a Working with Children Check. Applicants for all roles require a mandatory Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check.
