A major bank in Sydney is seeking a Senior SQL DBA SME with DevOps / Automation experience to lead the upgrade and modernisation of their SQL database estate.
This is an initial 6 month contract likely to extend.
This is a hands-on technical role driving automation, scalability, and performance improvements across critical data platforms.
You'll work at the forefront of a major transformation program—modernising legacy environments, introducing DevOps practices, and helping the existing team upskill in automation and modern database management.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead SQL Server upgrades, migrations, and modernisation initiatives (on-prem and cloud).
* Design and implement database automation solutions (CI/CD pipelines, IaC, automated deployment/testing).
* Mentor and upskill the DBA and engineering teams in modern tooling and DevOps methodologies.
* Drive continuous improvement—identifying opportunities to simplify, automate, and enhance reliability.
* Support and optimise database operations through proactive monitoring and performance tuning.
Essential Skills & Experience
* Proven experience as a Senior / Lead SQL Server DBA (2016–2022+ versions).
* Strong DevOps experience (Azure DevOps, Jenkins, GitHub Actions, etc.).
* Expertise with PowerShell, Terraform, or Ansible for automation and Infrastructure-as-Code.
* Solid understanding of CI/CD pipelines, database deployment automation, and version control practices.
* Experience modernising SQL environments—migrations to Azure SQL, Managed Instance, or AWS RDS.
* Strong troubleshooting, performance tuning, and optimisation skills.
* Excellent communication and mentoring ability—capable of upskilling and guiding technical teams.
