Note: Although Head Office is located at Barangaroo in Sydney. This role can be located in any major city across Australia as many of the IT teams work remotely.

Robert Half Executive Search has been exclusively retained by The Australian Computer Society (ACS), the professional Association for Australia's technology sector, to identify an accomplished senior leader to join the organisation as their Chief Technology Officer (CTO). The successful individual may be a proven CTO or, alternatively, may be in a 2IC position at present leading teams and ready to step into their first CTO position.

With a presence in every state in Australia, this organisation plays a vital role in the country's ICT industry, supporting and inspiring thousands of IT professionals in their careers each year. Through their rich ecosystem and partnerships with both commerce and government, the organisation offers a variety of programmes and online resources, including skills assessments, training courses, market-leading events, and pioneering thought leadership materials.


The Role

Reporting to the CEO, the CTO will be responsible for aligning vision with action – delivering change while fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement to drive the technology strategy and successfully deliver transformation at pace. This executive role oversees the planning, implementation, and management of technology systems and infrastructure to support operational execution, innovation, and growth.

The successful CTO will lead the whole IT function for the ACS solving business problems, building innovative digital solutions and service offerings for customers and building and driving high‑performance teams while being fiscally responsible.

* Leadership of a significant digital technology transformation to be delivered at pace.
* Leadership by example of a large remote team (20+ FTE) – operating as part of the team in a hands‑on capacity where necessary, removing obstacles and driving positive change.
* Responsibility for the design, architecture, project management and delivery of innovative solutions to improve services and maintain competitive edge, enhancing customer (member) experience.
* Implementation of industry‑leading technology modernisation strategy, including systems, infrastructure and cybersecurity, to enable efficient operations,, and business growth.
* Oversee the rapid design, implementation, and maintenance of IT systems and infrastructure, including seamless integrations of Salesforce, MuleSoft, Adobe etc.
* Responsibility for the reliability, security, and scalability of technology platforms.
* Manage IT budgets, forecasts, and cost optimisation initiatives.
* Oversee vendor relationships, contract negotiations, and service level agreements.
* Work closely with key existing and new partners, including corporate and government bodies, and innovative industry leaders from AI to Tech Policy Design Institute.

Success in this role can lead to career advancement opportunities for aspirational and ambitious individuals, providing exposure to senior stakeholders at the highest levels across industry, government, and academia. The CTO will also be actively sought out to confidently represent the ACS as its technology spokesperson, positioning it as a leader in technological innovation and thought leadership in Australia.


Your Profile

Currently in a senior technology leadership position, the successful candidate will bring a proven record of delivering multiple technology transformation projects at pace. Varied expertise across the IT function, with a deep technical understanding of software engineering and development will ensure the incoming CTO can hit the ground running and start adding value quickly in the new role.

The successful candidate will likely be someone who has had exposure to a variety of businesses including tech‑enabled/driven small and medium‑sized commercial businesses (or Business Units of larger firms), agile start‑up or scale‑up environments and technology consulting. Experience in developing innovative and sophisticated B2C or B2B technology platforms or 2‑sided marketplaces is of interest also.


Competencies Sought

* Ability to develop comprehensive technology strategies and roadmaps.
* Proven track record of delivering digital transformation on a large scale at pace.
* Demonstrated success in leading transformational projects, including product management and process optimisation.
* Ability to anticipate emerging trends and business needs, driving advancements across architecture, digital platforms, automation, AI, cloud solutions, and cybersecurity.
* Solid expertise across software engineering, IT infrastructure and operations, data analytics, cybersecurity, cloud computing, and third‑party vendor management.
* Expertise in ITIL and Agile methodologies.
* Experienced at engaging effectively with senior internal and external stakeholders at the highest levels across public, private and commercial organisations.
