This role is critical in developing and maintaining strong customer relationships, driving retail excellence and growth of our IGA footprint to ensure our brand and retailers are thriving in the Queensland marketplace.
Reporting into the CEO of Metcash Food, and sitting on the Food Senior Leadership Team, this role leads a cross-functional team spanning sales, logistics and commercial to generate sales growth, optimise operational efficiency, and ensure a consistently high level of customer satisfaction.As a key member of the IGA Queensland State Board, the GM plays a key leadership role in shaping and executing the Metcash Food strategy in Queensland and contributing to the broader Food pillar strategy.Success in this position requires strategic vision, strong commercial acumen, exceptional stakeholder management, inspiring leadership and a laser focus on results.
A deep understanding of both retail and wholesale environments, commercial levers and the ability to operate both strategically and operationally is essential for success.
Experience working closely with independent businesses is also an advantage.In this RoleSafety Leadership: Champion a strong safety culture by providing visible leadership, role-modelling safe practices, and driving continuous improvement to reduce critical risks across all sites.Customer & Stakeholder Engagement: Build and maintain trusted relationships with supermarket customers, the IGA State Board, and external stakeholders, ensuring long-term sustainability, customer satisfaction, and positive brand representation.Strategic & Operational Execution: Develop and implement a state-aligned strategy to grow the supermarkets business, lead end-to-end operations across distribution, supply chain, and store support functions to deliver on efficiency, service, and performance targets.Sales, Financial & Commercial Management: Drive top-line sales, deliver EBIT, and manage the state P&L through targeted growth initiatives, margin improvement, cost control, and market responsiveness, while enhancing supplier and retailer partnerships.People and Stakeholder Leadership: Lead cross-functional teams in QLD and across the national matrix, represent Metcash on JV Boards and industry events, and ensure the IGA brand is upheld through influencing retailers, operational excellence, and channel standards.You're Likely a Match IfExtensive experience in wholesale or retail operations, including a minimum of 10 years in senior leadership rolesProven ability to lead, motivate, and inspire high-performing teams through strong leadership and interpersonal skillsDemonstrated strength in strategic problem-solving and confident, effective decision-makingDeep financial and commercial acumen, with a strong track record of managing P&Ls, budgets, and successfully delivering growth initiativesExceptional communication, negotiation, and influencing capabilities across a range of stakeholdersStrategic mindset with the ability to balance long-term vision with short-term operational execution.Life at Metcash An abundance of learning, development, and career growth opportunities.
