Delivering Treaty in Victoria
The First Peoples - State Relations Group is responsible for ground-breaking work in the areas of cultural rights, self-determination, treaty, and truth. The group's efforts will deliver unprecedented outcomes for First Peoples as the first Treaty process substantially underway in Australia.
About the Role
* Treaty Negotiations and Strategy Branch: This branch leads Treaty negotiations with First Peoples' Representative groups on behalf of the State and embeds a whole-of-government, coordinated approach for statewide Treaty and Traditional Owner Treaties with Aboriginal Victorians.
* Principal Legal Adviser: As the Principal Legal Adviser, you will work with the Special Counsel - Treaty to coordinate and lead a team of legal advisers delivering high-quality, strategic, clear, and considered legal advice for the Treaty Negotiations and Strategy branch and departmental senior executives, Ministers, and the Premier.
Key Responsibilities:
* Research and provide culturally appropriate legal advice on sensitive issues within tight timeframes.
* Coordinate and lead a team of legal advisers to deliver research, correspondence, briefings, Cabinet Submissions, and reports.
* Work closely with the Special Counsel - Treaty to achieve strategic objectives.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
* Interpersonal and negotiation skills: Highly developed interpersonal and negotiation skills are essential for success in this role.
* Legal analysis and problem-solving: Strong legal, analytical, conceptual, and problem-solving skills are required to deliver high-quality legal advice.
* Communication and leadership: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, along with the ability to lead a team, are necessary to initiate, deliver, and manage strategic projects on time and to a high standard.
