to ensure a safe, secure, and functional environment in line with school policies and Work Health and Safety regulations.
Context statement
Laynhapuy Homelands School comprises nine Homeland Learning Centres located across North-East Arnhem Land,
supported by a central resource centre in Yirrkala. In addition to the Maintenance Officer based in Yirrkala, the school
employs a team of Maintenance Officers in the homeland communities who support the upkeep and maintenance of school
facilities.

1. Regularly inspect, repair, and maintain vehicles, buildings, fixtures, fittings, and grounds to ensure a safe learning
environment and compliance with Work Health and Safety regulations, using handyman or tradesperson skills as
required.
1. Identify and address potential WHS risks by taking immediate action and reporting hazards to ensure timely resolution.
2. Supervise and monitor the work of contractors to ensure tasks are completed to the required specifications and
standards.
4. Support homelands-based Maintenance Officers to ensure Homeland Learning Centre grounds, buildings, and
equipment are maintained to a high standard.
5. Maintain effective operational support services, including mail collection, relocation of furniture and equipment, local
purchasing, asset control, security, and vehicle maintenance.
6. Regularly inspect the LHS Resource Centre premises, reporting and responding promptly to any unusual activity (e.g.,
vandalism or break-ins).
7. Assist with school excursions, camps, sports days, and other special events as required.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Well-developed interpersonal skills to communicate appropriately with staff, students, community members and
contractors.
2. Building and general 'handyman' experience with the ability to produce high standard of finished work in a timely
manner.
3. Relevant trade experience or knowledge that would assist in maintaining and repairing school property and grounds.
4. Ability to work as part of the school team, use initiative, prioritise workload and work with limited supervision.
5. Knowledge and experience of Work Health and Safety practices and procedures.
Desirable
1. Experience working in remote Aboriginal community schools.
