About the role

We are looking for a Policy Analyst to join the Productivity Commission’s (PC) Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Stream. The Stream undertakes reporting, research and analysis that centres the voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Joining our policy team, you will have an opportunity to work on matters of importance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, including the development of recommendations to support improved policy making and reporting on governments’ progress towards their commitments under the National Agreement on Closing the Gap.

Your responsibilities will include:

* Undertake research and analysis relevant to the Stream’s work program.
* Assist with preparation of high quality research papers, case studies and reports.
* Engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, organisations and communities, as well as representatives of government agencies, businesses, research bodies and community organisations. This engagement will be consistent with the PC’s principles for engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
* Coordinate meetings, industry visits and public hearings as required.
* Contribute to a cultural culturally safe work environment within the team.

About you

Your experience working in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander policy development and/or program implementation will be highly valued in this role. We will be looking for you to apply your conceptual and analytical skills to prepare high quality research papers, case studies and reports.

You will engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait people, organisations and communities, along with representatives of other government agencies, businesses and organisations.

You will have demonstrated ability to build strong, sustainable working relationships, including with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, organisations and communities. This will require knowledge and understanding of principles for engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, organisations and communities. In this role, you will work effectively in teams, take initiative to assist others and contribute to ideas during work discussions and team meetings. You will lead through example, helping foster a culturally safe workplace that encourages collaboration, inclusion, innovation and ongoing improvement.

The ability to effectively plan and progress work and deliver on agreed outcomes by managing competing priorities, monitoring work progress, problem solving, identifying and implementing improvements and displaying resilience will be highly valued. Equally, proficient written and oral communication skills, including the ability to explain difficult technical concepts in plain English is essential.

Successful applicants will have a relevant academic qualification or equivalent professional work experience in areas such as public policy, social policy, economics or other social sciences, law, statistics and data analysis, or evaluation.

* This vacancy is for a non-ongoing specified term of 12 months. A merit pool of suitable candidates may be established and used to fill similar vacancies, either on an ongoing or non-ongoing basis.

Position eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment with the Productivity Commission, applicants must:

* be an Australian citizen or hold an Australian Citizenship
* be willing to undergo a security and character clearance (which may include, but not limited to, completing an identity verification check, police check, and obtaining/maintaining an Australian Government security vetting clearance if required by the role)
* provide evidence of mandatory qualifications (if applicable).

It is essential that the successful candidate has a comprehensive understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The ability to communicate with sensitivity and effectiveness with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals, community organisations and peak bodies is also required.
