Crime and Intelligence Legal Services Overview
Crime and Intelligence Legal Services is seeking experienced senior lawyers to fill a leadership position in our dedicated team. The role offers interesting operational work involving the implementation of new powers, supporting frontline efforts to enhance community safety.
In this challenging role, you will provide legal advice to investigators, senior officers, and members of the Senior Executive on complex aspects of investigations, policy, and other operational law enforcement initiatives affecting the Queensland Police Service.
You will work in a collaborative and supportive environment, receiving mentoring and guidance from experienced colleagues. Each senior legal officer leads a small number of legal officers, contributing to a positive and inclusive work culture.
Key Responsibilities:
* Act as a specialist legal practitioner providing expert advice and assistance to investigators and officers on complex criminal investigations, police powers, management and disruption of reportable offenders, and response to major incidents.
* Provide written and oral briefings on complex aspects of criminal law, evidence, administrative law, statutory interpretation, policy, procedures, risk management, and operational law enforcement initiatives affecting or likely to affect the Queensland Police Service.
* Undertake drafting warrants, settling complex affidavits, and applications; appear on behalf of police officers and the Queensland Police Service in relation to complex applications for covert warrants.
* Appear and provide advisory support at court hearings as required.
* Liaise with internal units and external agencies, including the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and government agencies.
* Offer high-quality confidential advice to senior officers and members of the Senior Executive on complicated and sensitive operational matters.
* Assist in developing and delivering specialist training programs and projects.
* Supervise and mentor legal officers within the Crime and Intelligence Legal Services as required.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
* Mandatory - Admission as a barrister or solicitor of the Supreme Court of Queensland and eligibility to practice in the Federal and High Courts of Australia.
* Qualification - Possession of a degree in law from a recognised institution or equivalent qualifications.
* Other - A security clearance to Negative Vetting Level 1 is required. Psychometric assessment may be undertaken prior to appointment. Driver's licence desirable.
