Victoria Police Forensic Services Department Lab Operations – Biometric Services Biological Sciences Group Evidence Recovery Unit Forensic Caseworker (FO-3) – On-going position available. About the role: The Victoria Police Forensic Services Department is an accredited laboratory that provides a professional forensic service to Victoria Police, persons involved with the administration of justice and the public. The function of the Evidence Recovery Unit is: * The examination of crime exhibits for the presence of biological material * The submission of biological material found on exhibits to the DNA Analysis Unit for DNA profiling * To participate in the recovery of biological material from exhibits in a multidisciplinary evidence recovery environment. As the successful applicant, some of your duties will include: * Assist in the supervision, training and mentoring of staff * Ensure the efficient and timely operation of services supplied by the Evidence Recovery Unit * Perform sample analyses, interpret analysis results and be aware of casework acceptance and management criteria * Maintain equipment, instruments, laboratory space and document performance with respect to quality control criteria * Participate in activities required to maintain accreditation and meet obligations as required * Respond to customer enquiries, maintain computerised records and compile statistical reports * Assist in relevant R&D projects that help improve and expand Group methodologies * Present evidence in Courts of law of a factual nature, in an impartial and concise manner as required * Prioritise casework and provide statistics to management * Attend and provide assistance at crime scenes in a multi-skilled environment where appropriate. * Maintain appropriate knowledge of Victoria Police and Department policies, procedures and legislation. Skills & Experience As the successful applicant, you will have: * Scientific/technical achievement, ability to interpret examinations and to successfully present * technical and discipline related knowledge and advice to scientific/technical and non-scientific * personnel at all levels, particularly in a Court context. * Proven commitment to quality in casework and/or research or the ability to provide it. * Well-developed specialist subject knowledge with an emphasis on forensic science. * Proven ability to work autonomously and/or within a team environment. * Ability to conduct scene examinations where little or no supervisory advice is available. * Demonstrated Conceptual, analytical and problem-solving skills. * An understanding of the customer service requirements of the position and a demonstrated record * of strong commitment and achievement in meeting customer needs. * A proven record of ethical behaviour and a demonstrated commitment to the Victoria Police Code * of Ethics and Conduct and the Organisational Values. Requirements and relevant information: * Ongoing role available. * Position is located at 31 Forensic Drive Macleod, Victoria. * A relevant tertiary qualification is required. * The successful candidate will be required to: * Provide a DNA sample (buccal swab) for use in laboratory quality control procedures (elimination purposes only) * Undergo pre-employment checks which may include fingerprint checks and misconduct screening. * Applicants must be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or hold a valid work permit or visa.
