Executive producer and commissioning editor, 7am

7am, owned by Solstice Media, is seeking a full time executive producer / commissioning editor for a seven month maternity leave cover contract.

The successful candidate will serve as editorial leader for 7am, setting the agenda, commissioning the show and taking responsibility for all aspects of production and publication. This includes managing a team of seven people, including hosts, producers, engineers and video producers. You will be responsible for the daily news podcast, as well as executing a growth strategy on social media.

The successful candidate will serve as a key member of the Solstice Media leadership team, working closely with the chief executive, general manager and publisher as we grow 7am’s position in the Australian podcast market.

This role requires deep knowledge of the Australian media landscape and news and current affairs, an extensive contact book, a strong news sense and skills as a storyteller, and a proven capacity for managing high performing creative teams. We’re looking for an executive producer who is highly organised, empathetic, and who is just as comfortable focusing on the tiny details as they are thinking strategically and creatively about the show’s growth.

This full time role is for a fixed term of seven months with the possibility to extend.


In this role you will:

* Serve as editorial leader for 7am, setting the agenda and taking responsibility for all aspects of production and publication.
* Work in collaboration with 7am’s hosts and executive producers to make editorial decisions, including story and talent selection and identifying legal and editorial issues.
* Oversee editorial direction and quality control of the show. This includes scripting, listening to drafts, restructuring, suggesting cuts and moves, suggesting tape selection and placement and music placement.
* Generate and implement new ideas to help grow 7am’s audience and continue to improve its storytelling.
* Manage producer schedules and assign stories.
* Manage a team of audio producers, engineers and hosts, including managing professional development, giving performance coaching, mentorship and ongoing feedback.
* Act as point of contact for 7am internally and contribute to show related business including PR, marketing and events planning.
* Generate and implement new ideas to help grow 7am’s audience and continue to improve its storytelling.
* Serve as editorial leader for audio at Solstice Media.
* Manage relationships with key audio partners.
* Identify and pursue growth opportunities and technologies that keep Solstice Media at the forefront of audio.
* Represent Solstice Media and 7am publicly, where appropriate.
* Foster a creative and productive work environment.
* Fulfil other duties as instructed from time to time.


Qualifications


Required

* At least 3 years managing a cross-platform editorial team
* Extensive experience in daily news and current affairs for a major outlet
* Demonstrated ability to manage production schedules
* Demonstrated experience in narrative journalism
* Extensive contacts in Australian journalism, politics and academia
* Thorough understanding of journalistic practices, laws and ethics and demonstrated capacity for sound editorial judgment.
* Experience managing social media output including adapting audio podcasts to video platforms
* Demonstrated ability to build audiences and deepen engagement across social platforms
* Ability to analyze and act on performance metrics
* Advanced understanding of online audiences and international podcast distribution trends.
* Demonstrated experience representing a news outlet to third parties, including podcast platforms.

This is a maternity leave position starting in February 2026. It is expected to run for seven months, with a potential to be extended.

It is a full time role.

This role is currently operating in a remote capacity. Candidates in Melbourne will be favourably considered.
