A leading defence engineering organisation supporting major naval platforms is seeking a Senior General Design Engineer (Naval Architect) to join its Sydney based team. The business operates within a long‑term design support program for in‑service naval vessels and offers strong technical depth, stability and career longevity within the defence sector.
Your new role
Reporting to the Project Engineering Manager, you will provide senior naval architecture and outfitting engineering support across complex naval platforms. This role combines hands on technical delivery with leadership, mentoring and cross‑discipline collaboration.
Key responsibilities include:
Delivering naval architecture engineering across general arrangement, concept design, weight control, stability, seakeeping, manoeuvring and ship performance
Providing outfitting design expertise including compartment layouts, structural closures, fire protection, deck arrangements, equipment foundations, ladders and platforms
Conducting technical investigations, root cause analysis and solution development
Producing and reviewing high‑quality technical reports and engineering documentation
Planning and coordinating engineering activities from concept through to delivery
Participating in design reviews and customer technical meetings
Providing technical guidance, supervision and mentoring to junior engineers
Working closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams to ensure integrated design outcomes
Operating in accordance with WHS, environmental and quality requirements in a regulated defence environment
What you'll need to succeed
To be successful in this role, you will have:
A Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Naval Architecture, Mechanical or related discipline)
Proven experience in naval architecture and outfitting design
Background working in a defence, maritime or heavy industrial environment
Knowledge of classification society rules, flag state and statutory regulations
Experience with ship structural design, foundations and systems integration
Strong written skills with the ability to produce clear, structured technical documentation
Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills
Ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver in a high‑pressure environment
Eligibility to obtain and maintain NV1 security clearance
