The opportunity we have available
The Communication Branch provides high quality advice and support through a range of services including ministerial announcements, speechwriting services, strategic communication services, media liaison, social media engagement, advertising campaigns and design and video services.
We are seeking a motivated and creative person to join our branch in our Social Media team at APS6 level. The position is required to help plan and deliver social media content and strategies, assist with issues management and to build relationships across the department, including with senior stakeholders.
The successful applicant will work in a small team, delivering creative communication and social media solutions and providing high quality communication advice to raise public awareness of the department’s programs and projects.
What will you do?
As part of a small team that is responsible for our social media presence across 6 accounts, you will engage with teams in our branch and across the department to develop social media content that raises public awareness of our policies and programs. You will also undertake regular analysis and reporting to inform communication planning.
- Working closely with the Social Media Manager to champion the department’s social strategy and enhance our social media presence.
- Leading the development of social media content, including developing engaging posts, content plans and visual assets.
- Building relationships with internal stakeholders, including liaising closely with program and policy areas to understand, anticipate and deliver on their social media needs, and working across the Communication Branch to facilitate outcomes.
- Managing a forward calendar of social content and identifying opportunities for proactive social content. Assisting with the publication and moderation of social media across the department’s accounts.
- Undertaking regular social media monitoring, analytics and evaluating account performance to inform future content planning.
- Maintaining an awareness of broader trends in the social media space, including platform and content developments, and sharing these with the team as appropriate.
- Undertaking basic graphic design activities.
- Supporting broader communication activities and content planning across the team as required, including social media advertising.
- Contributing to the positive culture of the branch.

You will have strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to translate complex information into easily digestible key messages and digital formats tailored to target audiences.
You will be able to build and maintain strong working relationships with key stakeholders, including client areas and external suppliers.
You will also have prior experience delivering in a social media, communication, marketing, or media team.

Eligibility requirements
Employment with the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, Sport and the Arts is subject to conditions prescribed within the Public Service Act 1999 including:
- Citizenship : candidates must be an Australian citizen at the time of submitting your application.
- Health Assessment : The preferred candidate may be required to undergo a medical examination conducted by the department’s preferred medical provider.
- Security Clearance : The successful candidate must be able to obtain and/or maintain a security clearance at Baseline Level. You must be willing to disclose all relevant and required information. You must have lived in Australia, or have a checkable background, for at least the preceding five years for Baseline Vetting clearances. More information on the security clearance vetting process is available on the Australian Government Security Vetting Agency (AGSVA) website.
- Police check : The successful candidate must satisfactory complete an Australian Federal Police criminal history check.
- Integrity and Performance check : The successful candidate must satisfy the requirements in an Integrity and Performance check which is completed by your most recent employer.
- Qualifications : Completion of a communication focused qualification such as a media cadetship, strategic communication, public relations, journalism or marketing degree or diploma is highly desirable.
- Experience : 3+ years’ experience delivering in social media / communication / marketing / media teams.
