Overview

An exciting opportunity is available for a Psychiatrist to join as a key member of the Brighter Beginnings teams, part of the Northern Sydney Local Health District Child Youth and Family Community Health Service. You’ll work alongside experienced colleagues, providing psychiatric expertise to support early intervention for children and their families, addressing social-emotional, behavioural and trauma-related challenges to prevent mental health presentations later in life.

Responsibilities

- Provide clinical consultation and support services within NSLHD to Community Paediatricians, Child and Family Health Nurses and Allied Health professionals who assess and manage children with developmental-behavioural and social-emotional issues, with a focus on younger children and early intervention.
- Undertake joint consultation and assessment with paediatric staff as indicated.
- Report to both the Child Youth and Family Clinical Director and CYMS Clinical Director and be an integral part of the community-based Child Youth and Family multidisciplinary team.
- Part of the CYF Community Health paediatric team, with daily clinical operations including defining consultation criteria, joint consultation processes, attendance at team meetings, and scheduling/leave approvals.
- Professionally, for specialist psychiatry, report to the Child Youth Mental Health Service Clinical Director; provide professional guidance and supervision for management of complex cases; conduct regular case supervision and mentoring.
- Support teaching, training, research, quality improvement activities within NSLHD; contribute to local education and supervision as part of the role.
- Ensure coordinated mental health and community paediatric service delivery to children, young people and families; provide secure and appropriate care for developmental and mental health needs.

Selection Criteria

- MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia. Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZCP) or eligibility for registration; applicants expecting to receive their Fellowship within 3 months may be considered.
- Demonstrated behaviours aligned with CORE Values (Collaboration, Openness, Respect, Empowerment) in interactions with stakeholders, colleagues, patients and carers.
- Advanced knowledge and experience in assessment and treatment of children and young people with co-morbid mental health and neurodevelopmental conditions including developmental disability, complex ADHD and autism spectrum disorder.
- High-level skills in managing complex mental health problems in children and young people with neurodevelopmental conditions in a multidisciplinary context; willingness to conduct joint assessments with Paediatricians.
- Experience with a range of treatment methods including psychotherapeutic approaches and use of psychotropic medications for children and young people, including those with neurodevelopmental conditions.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to engage with a wide range of people and teams, including consumers and carers.
- Commitment to teaching, continuing education, research and quality improvement in a multidisciplinary context; advanced skills in supportive consultation at individual, group and service levels.
- Adaptability to the needs of the child and family and changing requirements of the position.
