This organisation plays a critical role in Australia's national payments ecosystem, operating high‐availability, real‐time transaction and settlement platforms at significant scale. Their engineering environment underpins nationwide payments clearing and settlement and continues to evolve in response to regulatory, security, and industry‐driven change.
About the Role
This is a hands‐on L2 / L3 Production Support Engineer role supporting core NPP payment platforms, encompassing APIs, fraud detection, disputes, and settlement services.
You'll work deep in live production systems, performing advanced technical investigation across payment message flows, platform integrations, and data pipelines. The role is heavily engineering‐oriented, requiring strong diagnostic capability, system‐level thinking, and the ability to trace issues end‐to‐end across distributed services.
You will partner closely with software engineers, platform teams, operations, and vendors to maintain system reliability, resolve complex incidents, and continuously improve platform robustness in a 24x7, mission‐critical environment. This is not a BA or coordination role — it is suited to someone who enjoys being close to the technology and owning technical outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide L2 / L3 engineering support for NPP payment platforms and supporting services
* Perform deep technical analysis of payment message flows, transaction failures, and settlement anomalies
* Investigate complex production incidents, including major incidents, through to root cause and resolution
* Diagnose issues using log analysis, data interrogation, system metrics, and distributed tracing
* Work with engineering teams on defect identification, root‐cause, remediation, and release validation
* Support and improve platform reliability, availability, and performance
* Contribute to and enhance runbooks, monitoring, alerting, and operational tooling
* Drive continuous improvement through automation, better diagnostics, and improved operational processes
The Successful Candidate
Will Have:
* Strong experience supporting or engineering payment platforms or transaction‐based systems in regulated, high‐availability environments
* Solid understanding of payments message flows, particularly PACS messaging
* Proven experience operating in 24x7 production or critical engineering environments
* A strong engineering mindset with the ability to diagnose, reason, and resolve issues end‐to‐end
Strong Hands‐On Experience With
* Splunk (or equivalent) for deep log analysis and incident investigation
* SQL (MSSQL and/or Oracle) for data validation, reconciliation, and forensic analysis
* XML and structured payment messages
* AWS, including CLI usage and services such as S3
* Linux / Bash for system‐level investigation and scripting
* Control‐M or equivalent scheduling and batch processing tools
* Excel for reconciliation, analysis, and operational insights
Highly Regarded
o Exposure to SWIFT components (e.g. Payment Access Gateway)
o Experience supporting real‐time payments or settlement platforms
o Background in reliability engineering, platform support, or production engineering roles
What's on offer?
o Long‐term contract working on nationally critical payments infrastructure
o Engineering‐led environment with strong extension potential
o Onshore, Sydney‐based role, working closely with local platform and engineering teams
