About us

As a department our purpose is to help the community to prevent, prepare for, respond to and recover from the impact of fire and emergency events.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) is the primary provider of fire, rescue and emergency management programs and services throughout Queensland. The department encompasses the Fire and Rescue Service, disaster management services, the Rural Fire Service and the State Emergency Service (SES), and also supports other volunteer groups providing emergency response to Queenslanders.

QFES is one department with many services, many capabilities and many partners.

Purpose of role

Advanced Capability Support contributes to the department by supporting the planning, development and production implementation of decision information support systems spanning multiple hazards. Consisting of a team of technical and operational specialists, the unit is responsible for the managing a range of specialist analytics and decision support tools and systems that enable QFES to meet community needs.

Reporting to the Executive Manager, you will contribute to the development of documentation for technical processes and systems and the creation of related communications for the capability uplift project, including user training guides. You will work with a range of internal and external stakeholders to write, edit and construct administrator, developer and user documentation for existing and new processes relating to risk assessment, environmental sciences and emergency services operations to deliver robust documentation, systems and data processes.

Key requirements

Highly desirable requirements
- Experience documenting existing systems, including, administrator, developer, and user documentation.
- Entry level programming and familiarity with Cloud Computing concepts i.e. Amazon Web Services, including Linux deployments.
- Familiarity with Geospatial Data and systems - e.g. ESRI, QGIS, MapInfo or others.

Special requirements
- It is expected that the incumbent may participate in an out-of-hours on-call roster during emergency operations. This may require work outside of normal hours (e.g. night shift), including weekends, working extended hours and may include deployment intrastate or interstate.

Your key accountabilities

Your part in the ongoing success of our department, in supporting key frontline services will see you responsible for a variety of work, including, but not limited to:

- Develop, review and implement systems documentation, process and procedures, and training materials, within negotiated timeframes, to support capability uplift and development.
- Work closely with and proactively engage users, developers, administrators, and systems to capture requirements, processes, caveats, and related information.
- Publish outputs to appropriate places such as SharePoint, Github, or other approved platforms as required.
- Produce communications to key stakeholders regarding new developments, products, or offerings to ensure changes or updates to capability are visible to stakeholders.
- Assist in the preparation and delivery of short training sessions on usage of various products developed in house.
- Prepare and review reports, briefs, submissions and other correspondence which support the implementation of advanced capability strategies and programs in accordance with departmental requirements.
- Liaise and maintain effective working relationships with key internal and external stakeholders relating to hazard analysis, prediction, and disaster management ensuring capability products are maintained.
- Contribute to the communication of scientifically based disaster risk management data, and tools to support planning and decision-making during phases of disaster management.
