Overview 
Engineering Manager role at ForeFlight. This position is based in Prospect, SA (near Adelaide, Australia) and is a hybrid role requiring in-office presence three days per week. The role reports to the OzRunways CTO. 
We are seeking a technically well-rounded individual with experience building and shipping mobile, web, or backend applications. This is a technical management role responsible for people and process management of the software engineering team, and for contributing to high-level technical direction for the team. Engineers work closely with the product team to define a roadmap, collaborate with other teams, and maintain developer experience and codebase health. 
Tech stack includes Electronic Flight Bag mobile apps (native iOS and Android), Java/Kotlin (Quarkus) backend services, and web apps to support these applications.

Key Responsibilities 
Provide formal management and career development for engineers, including regular 1:1s, performance reviews, and ongoing coaching 
Create and reinforce healthy team norms, values, and processes that foster trust, collaboration, and accountability 
Maintain strong communication and emotional intelligence when working with diverse personalities and distributed team members 
Partner with product management to prioritize, plan, and deliver roadmap initiatives on time and with high quality 
Drive end-to-end project execution, ensuring alignment with business goals while balancing technical trade-offs 
Apply modern software engineering practices (CI/CD, testing strategies, code reviews, observability, Infrastructure as Code) to improve delivery 
Contribute to design discussions, architectural reviews, and technical strategy 
Maintain credibility with engineers by understanding technical challenges and guiding direction, while empowering senior engineers to make decisions 
Balance technical depth with humility and know when to defer to subject matter experts 
Remain technically hands-on enough to support the team when needed, but focus on leadership, coaching, and delivery 
Basic Qualifications 
8+ years of professional software engineering experience 
2+ years of experience managing or leading a software engineering team 
Proven track record of delivering software projects in collaboration with product management and cross-functional teams 
Strong technical background in server-side software engineering 
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with demonstrated emotional intelligence and people management skills 
Preferred Qualifications 
Hands-on coding experience in Java, Kotlin, relational databases (Postgres and SQLite) or related backend technologies 
Experience managing engineers across multiple platforms (backend, mobile, web) 
Prior experience establishing engineering processes, team culture, and values in a growing team 
Aviation experience or being an aviation enthusiast is a plus

Pay is based on experience and qualifications. Summary Pay Range: 140,000-180,000 AUD.
