Job Description
About the Role
The Friends' School is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Casual Laboratory Technician to join our Science Faculty, supporting students in Years 7–12.
This casual role provides essential practical and technical support to Science Faculty activities, working closely with the School Science Laboratory Coordinator and other Laboratory Technicians. The successful applicant will help ensure laboratories, equipment, and resources operate safely and effectively, supporting teaching staff and student learning. This role also includes responsibilities for laboratory safety, chemical handling, and equipment maintenance in line with School policies and compliance requirements.
Key Focus Areas
* Support Science Faculty activities by preparing materials, equipment, and experiments for Years 7–12 classes.
* Maintain a clean and safe laboratory environment, including safe storage, handling, and disposal of chemicals.
* Advise and assist teaching staff with demonstrations, experiments, and technical instruction.
* Support senior students with individual investigation tasks, including International Baccalaureate Internal Assessment tasks.
* Maintain accurate records of laboratory resources, equipment, and purchases.
* Undertake routine repairs, maintenance, or sourcing of laboratory apparatus.
* Ensure compliance with safety procedures, risk management processes, and School policies.
Promote a strong child-safe culture and follow mandatory reporting requirements.

Essential Qualifications
* Diploma of Laboratory Technology, relevant science degree, or equivalent experience/skills.
* Current Tasmanian Registration to Work with Vulnerable People (Employment category).
* Current National Police Check (issued within the last 6 months).
Strong knowledge of laboratory safety, chemical handling, and work health and safety practices.
Desirable Skills and Experience
* Experience operating a school or analytical laboratory.
* Broad understanding of general sciences including chemistry, biology, physics, geology, and electronics.
* Competence in inventory management and computer applications relevant to laboratory operations.
* Experience in the care and sustenance of living organisms.
* Demonstrated interpersonal and teamwork skills in a school environment.
* Ability to work independently, with initiative, and minimal supervision.
* Commitment to ongoing professional learning and participation in school initiatives.
