Full-time, continuing position Harness your expertise as Technical Specialist, Fluid and Wind Tunnels Base salary from $108,557 plus 17% superannuation About the opportunity The Technical Specialist, Fluid and Wind Tunnel s is responsible for coordinating the operations of a specific discipline and equipment. This includes ensuring the Laboratory and Workshop meet educational/research needs and objectives of its users by providing sustainable high quality and professional services. The Technical Specialist will provide sound, specialist advice, supervision, guidance and technical support to researchers and students using the Laboratory and Workshop, working closely with the Senior Technical Officer, Academics and key educators, and providing collaborative input and advice for educational/research projects being undertaken within the Laboratory and Workshop. The role also ensures that the relevant Work, Health and Safety standards of the Workshop Laboratory are met and are aligned to the University’s WHS policy and relevant legislation. Your key responsibilities will be to: manage the Laboratory and Workshop, including meeting the needs and objectives of its users in a sustainable manner provide expert advice, sound technical research support and assistance to users ensure that the Laboratory’s and Workshop's systems, reporting and documentation requirements are met, including governance lead the implementation of service improvements, service excellence and operational efficiencies within the designated technical area plan and manage the effective utilisation of resources within the designated area of responsibility, in alignment with the TSS overall strategy and objectives champion best practice workplace health & safety, compliance and risk mitigation provide financial management support for the Laboratory and Workshop About you Tertiary or trade qualifications in Fitting/Machining, Welding and Hydraulics and relevant experience, or a demonstrated equivalent combination of relevant training and practical experience current Laser Safety Certification or a willingness to obtain experience in managing laboratory and workshop facilities, including experience in demonstrating experiments and using specialised equipment/apparatus to collect data. Experience of optimising protocols and experimental design (e.g. Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and associated equipment) proven ability to maintain, troubleshoot, repair and perform preventive maintenance on hydraulic and pneumatic systems of machinery and equipment (e.g. wind tunnel, high speed flow tanks, wave tanks) experience in implementing, managing and overseeing a WHS system/framework within a workshop environment. A willingness to undertake relevant WHS training/courses, if required experience operating manual and CNC machines (e.g. lathes, drills, mills) and welding/brazing equipment (MIG/TIG) to manufacture precise components based on technical drawings, CAD models and according to job specifications. Corresponding knowledge to prepare, set up and work with a variety of materials including metal, wood and plastic ability to establish and maintain working relationships with stakeholders ability to maintain strong working relationships and to work collaboratively with other staff to support required organisational outcomes. Effective communication skills with sound negotiating and conflict resolution skills and a demonstrated level of tact and discretion in dealing with matters.
