Position Summary
The Physical Education Teacher is responsible for planning and delivering engaging physical education instruction that promotes physical fitness, health, teamwork, sportsmanship, and lifelong wellness. The teacher creates a safe and inclusive learning environment that supports students' physical, social, and emotional development while aligning instruction with Indiana Academic Standards and district expectations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Instruction and Curriculum
* Plan and deliver standards-based physical education instruction for high school students.
* Develop lessons that promote physical fitness, movement skills, teamwork, personal responsibility, and healthy lifestyles.
* Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse needs and abilities of students.
* Incorporate a variety of activities, including individual sports, team sports, fitness training, and wellness education.
* Assess student performance and provide timely feedback on progress and participation.
* Maintain accurate records of grades, attendance, and student progress.
Classroom and Student Management
* Establish and maintain a safe, structured, and positive learning environment.
* Enforce school and district policies related to student behavior, safety, and participation.
* Supervise students in gymnasiums, locker rooms, fitness areas, athletic fields, and other assigned locations.
* Promote respect, sportsmanship, teamwork, and appropriate conduct among students.
Health and Safety
* Ensure all physical activities are conducted safely and appropriately.
* Inspect equipment and facilities regularly and report safety concerns promptly.
* Follow district procedures regarding student injuries, emergencies, and accident reporting.
* Maintain knowledge of CPR, first aid, and concussion awareness requirements as applicable.
Collaboration and Communication
* Communicate effectively with students, parents, staff, and administration.
* Collaborate with colleagues to support student success and school initiatives.
* Participate in staff meetings, professional development, and district training opportunities.
* Work cooperatively with athletic staff, counselors, nurses, and support personnel as needed.
Professional Responsibilities
* Maintain appropriate teacher licensure and certifications required by the State of Indiana.
* Demonstrate professionalism, reliability, confidentiality, and ethical conduct.
* Support district goals, initiatives, and the overall mission of Griffith Public Schools.
* Perform other duties as assigned by the building principal or administration.
Qualifications
* Valid Indiana teaching license in Physical Education or appropriate licensure area.
* Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
* Strong classroom management and organizational skills.
* Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
* Ability to build positive relationships with students, staff, and families.
* Knowledge of physical education curriculum, fitness concepts, and student wellness practices.
Preferred Qualifications
* Coaching experience or willingness to coach extracurricular activities.
* CPR/First Aid certification.
* Experience working with middle and high school students.
Physical Requirements
* Ability to demonstrate and participate in physical activities.
* Ability to stand, walk, bend, lift, and move equipment as necessary.
* Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
The work environment includes gymnasiums, fitness rooms, athletic fields, locker rooms, classrooms, and outdoor activity areas. The position may require supervision of students during extracurricular or after-school activities.
