About the Role
The Technical Officer supports the effective day-to-day operations of the Bushfire team and is responsible for delivering key operational functions of the Bushfire Planning and Design (BPAD) scheme, including the assessment of applications and renewals, conducting technical audits, managing practitioner enquiries, participating in working groups and supporting the investigation and resolution of complaints.
Working collaboratively across the organisation, the Technical Officer provides specialist technical expertise to support the development of guidance materials, delivery of training and professional development initiatives, and engagement with practitioners and operational stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
* Support and coordinate the day to day operation of the BPAD scheme, including assessing new applications in accordance with established criteria and escalating complex cases to the Manager.
* Conduct technical audits of accredited practitioners, documenting findings and recommending outcomes for Manager review and sign off.
* Investigate and respond to complaints from accredited practitioners, escalating matters as appropriate in line with the scheme's compliance framework, in collaboration with the Compliance team.
* Respond to technical enquiries from accredited practitioners, referring matters that require strategic or precedent setting decisions to the Manager.
* Draft and coordinate supporting documents including technical bulletins, guidelines, practice notes and other publications for accredited practitioners, government stakeholders and the public, for Manager review and approval.
* Coordinate the development and delivery of professional training courses offered by the Association to accredited practitioners, government agencies and other stakeholders.
* Support the establishment and operation of Bushfire Working Groups in relevant states and territories, coordinating activities and maintaining working level relationships with group members.
* Identify and develop initiatives in the bushfire sector that support the Association's vision presenting recommendations to the Manager for consideration.
Key Selection Criteria
* Tertiary education in Bushfire Planning and Management or a relevant environmental field.
* High level of technical knowledge in bushfire protection, including building and planning systems.
* Strong awareness of key legislation, standards and codes affecting bushfire protection.
* Ability to understand and work with complex regulatory frameworks, government and standards bodies.
* Effective relationship management skills with diverse working level stakeholders, including practitioners, government contacts and educators.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to produce professional reports, technical documents and presentations.
* Effective negotiation skills to reach outcomes with the support and acceptance of all parties.
* Exceptional organisational, communication and time management skills, with proven ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
* Highly developed administrative and computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, CRM and other systems).
* Proactive, self-starting approach with the ability to take initiative within the direction set by the Manager, actively contributing to BPAD's operational effectiveness.
