The Provisional Fellow position in Paediatric Surgery (Clinical) based at The Children's Hospital at Westmead is available for 12 months from 01 February 2027 or 02 August 2027. The department of General Surgery at The Children's Hospital at Westmead is a high-volume centre (more than 3000 cases annually) that can offer a broad experience in Paediatric General Surgery and Sub Specialties. It also has a number of well-developed subspecialty teams that have focused areas of practice. These include Colorectal Surgery, Hepatobiliary Surgery, Onco Surgery, Thoracic Surgery, Transplant Surgery and Urology.
The Clinical Fellow in Paediatric Surgery is a unique position to help prepare and develop a candidate for consultant practice. This position provides an opportunity to develop skills important for a consultant role in the inpatient and outpatient setting. The position can offer either a year of a single sub-speciality exposure (except Transplant) combined with a broad general exposure to a range of areas to either consolidate or develop new skills in an area of interest to the candidate. This includes operative exposure, multidisciplinary clinics and meetings and long terms follow up clinics. The position has an important leadership and educational role.
The Clinical Fellow in Paediatric Surgery is actively involved in clinical duties and research within the Department as determined by the Department Head and subspecialty team. The Fellow continues clinical activities at an early post fellowship level. This includes on-call, supervisory and teaching responsibilities with regards to surgical Trainees and Residents. The Clinical Fellow also works closely with many of the other clinical teams in inpatient and outpatient care both clinically and strategically. The education role includes clinical supervision within the Department of Surgery as well as the hospital wide education program.

Selection Criteria

* MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.
* Obtained FRACS in Paediatric Surgery or recognised International Paediatric Surgery specialist qualification. Demonstrate an interest in Paediatric Surgery including subspecialties. Candidates close to finishing their training in Paediatric Surgery will also be considered.
* Paediatric surgery experience in a tertiary centre.
* Excellent communication skills with leadership and team building skills and a demonstrated ability to liaise effectively with other health professionals.
* Demonstrated aptitude for clinical and academic paediatric surgical and related teaching of Medical Students, Junior medical staff and other clinical staff in theatres, clinics and at formal teaching sessions.
* Ongoing commitment to further education and professional development and demonstrated ability to supervise Junior Medical Staff and other clinical staff.
* Demonstrated interest, motivation and capability in research.
* Emergency Management of Severe Trauma Course or equivalent (EMST / APLS/ ATLS or equivalent) or registered to undertake one before starting in position.
