Primary objective
Assist with the preparation and implementation of fire management plans and strategies across Fire Management Zones in the
Northern Territory, and undertake wildfire suppression activities for the protection of life, property and the environment from the
effects of wildfire.
Context statement
Bushfires NT undertakes fire management programs, including compliance and enforcement, planned burning operations,
supporting and undertaking wildfire suppression activities, and working together with volunteers to support a network of
stakeholders.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Undertake the responsibilities of a Fire Warden under the Bushfire Management Act 2016.
2. Assist in the administration of mitigation programs including resourcing, planning, maintenance, reporting and evaluation.
3. Under direction, support the coordination of wildfires and where needed, participate in activities to protect the community
from wildfires, performing functional roles using the Australasian Inter-service Incident Management System (AIIMS).
4. Provide support to volunteers, ensuring results are achieved against agreed objectives to ensure safe and effective fire
management outcomes whilst complying with legislative requirements.
5. Develop and maintain productive working relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders both internally and externally.
6. Support the development and execution of bushfire mitigation regarding land management in the region, including contributing
to risk assessments and tailored fire management plans and providing guidance to landholders and stakeholders.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Demonstrated understanding, experience or qualification in mitigation burning, wildfire suppression, planning and
implementation of rural fire management.
2. Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain productive working relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders both
internally and externally including volunteers.
3. Demonstrated competence and experience in the implementation of fire management programs, including prescribed burning.
4. Demonstrated capability to adapt to change and evaluate risk in a complex and sensitive environment in undertaking mitigation
and management of wildfire suppression.
5. Current NT driver's licence and Working with Children (Ochre) Card (or equivalent), or ability to obtain.
Desirable
1. Heavy vehicle licence up to Heavy Rigid.
2. Qualifications or demonstrated working experience in Australasian Inter-service Incident Management System (AIIMS).
Further information
During periods of heightened operational activity, the incumbent may be required to provide operational support across the
Territory, including travel and work in remote locations.
The successful application will be required to provide a current criminal history check and have a Working with Children (Ochre)

across the Northern Territory, while supporting volunteers and stakeholders in the protection of life, property and the
environment from the effects of wildfire.

Key duties and responsibilities
1. Undertake the responsibilities of a Fire Control Officer pursuant to the Bushfire Management Act 2016, ensuring responses to
bushfire incidents, investigative activities and issuing of permits are undertaken in accordance with legislative obligations.
2. Act as Incident Controller (IC) for Level 1 incidents, ensuring safe and effective operational response.
3. Support the development and execution of bushfire mitigation in the region, including the assessment of risk and preparation
of tailored fire management plans, providing guidance to landholders and stakeholders and assist with recruitment and
procurement actions to support operational readiness.
4. Lead mitigation programs including slashing, clearing tracks, planned burning operations.
5. Assist with the delivery of firefighting training to stakeholders including volunteers and contribute to response planning and
risk identification activities
6. Assist in the development of tools to support landowner engagement and understanding of legislative requirements.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Demonstrated experience and qualification in wildfire suppression including the ability to lead operational emergency response
activities involving volunteers and other agency personnel including working knowledge of AIIMS.
2. Ability to understand and interpret legislation and apply this knowledge to a variety of situations.
3. Demonstrated competence and experience in the implementation of fire management programs including undertaking risk
assessments and prescribed burns to reduce bushfire risk.
4. Demonstrated experience working with volunteers, leading and managing people and working effectively as a part of a team.
5. Working knowledge of computerised systems for Incident management, compliance, investigative and reporting purposes.
6. Ability to cultivate and maintain productive networks and working relationships with a broad range of internal and external
stakeholders and government agencies including community engagement and consultation approaches.
7. Current NT driver's licence and Working with Children (Ochre) Card (or equivalent), or ability to obtain

1. Qualifications or demonstrated working experience in Australasian Inter-service Incident Management System (AIIMS).
2. Awareness of Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping technology and its application to fire management.

Territory, including travel and work in remote locations, and will be required to undertake remunerated, rostered on-call
responsibilities as the Northern Territory Duty Officer (NTDO) including after hours and on weekends.
