The Royal Melbourne Hospital is seeking an experienced and values-driven senior nurse leader to take on the role of Planned Surgery Access Manager. This is a pivotal leadership position responsible for the integrity, performance and clinical governance of the Planned Surgery Waiting List, ensuring patients receive safe, timely and equitable access to surgery.
Your opportunity
In this role, you will provide strategic and operational leadership across the planned surgery access pathway — from referral through to admission. Working closely with perioperative services, surgical and medical teams, anaesthetics, patient flow and executive stakeholders, you will lead access decision-making, manage clinical risk, and drive continuous improvement.
You will oversee Surgical Liaison Nurses, Clerical Teams, the Pre-Admission Clinic and 3 East Admissions, with a strong focus on compliance, data integrity, workforce capability and patient experience.
About the role
* Leadership and oversight of the Planned Surgery Waiting List in line with DHS Planned Surgery Access Policy and ESIS business rules
* Senior nursing authority for access-related clinical prioritisation, risk escalation and complex decision-making
* End-to-end accountability for planned surgery access pathways and handovers across services
* Driving initiatives to reduce day-of-surgery cancellations and improve readiness for surgery
* Governance oversight of ESIS data integrity, audits and compliance reporting
* Building a psychologically safe, high-performing and engaged workforce
About you
You are a confident and collaborative senior nurse leader with a strong systems mindset. You balance clinical risk, equity, efficiency and compliance, and you are comfortable leading multidisciplinary teams through complexity and change.
* Registration as a Registered Nurse with AHPRA
* Demonstrated senior nursing leadership experience in access, patient flow, perioperative or complex surgical environments
* Proven ability to lead teams through operational and cultural change
* Strong understanding of planned surgery policy, clinical prioritisation and data-informed decision-making
* A genuine commitment to the Melbourne Way — putting people first, leading with kindness and achieving excellence together
* Postgraduate qualification in nursing leadership, health administration or health systems improvement
* Experience leading access reform, service redesign or large-scale quality improvement initiatives
* Advanced capability in using health data to drive operational outcomes
