Position Overview Ongoing | Full Time | $167k - $218k 15.4% superannuation Clayton Victoria Location I Generous Leave Provisions Lead the Science facility to ensure it is a centre of research and innovation excellence About the Opportunity The Senior Principal Scientist leads the Science Department and is responsible for guiding the overall scientific development of the facility and directing the international synchrotron research program at the Australian Synchrotron - Australia's largest standalone research facility. The Australian Synchrotron is a landmark research facility that delivers world-leading synchrotron science for Australian and international Users. The facility operates a 3 GeV electron accelerator and storage ring that delivers brilliant beams of synchrotron light to beamlines that allow research to be undertaken in fields including health and medical, food, environment, biotechnology, nanotechnology, energy, mining, agriculture, advanced materials and heritage and archaeological research. The User program manages more than 6,000 researcher visits annually with registered Users from academia, government research departments, museums, art galleries, publicly funded research agencies, medical research institutes, hospitals, and a wide range of industry sectors. About You "We are seeking an exceptional Leader that will mentor and support members of the Science Team and play a pivotal role as part of the Senior Management Team to lead the development of the science program and the research capabilities of the Australian Synchrotron" - Michael James, Director - Australian Synchrotron The key duties of the position include Your Duties and Responsibilities Lead and manage the safe, effective and productive operation of the Science function of the Australian Synchrotron including leading and managing the beamline teams to deliver excellence in the User experience as well as excellence in the application of synchrotron X-ray techniques. Lead and coordinate the scientific research programs at the Australian Synchrotron. Manage the User program for the Australian Synchrotron including associated advisory committees so as to meet performance targets and report on the outcomes of beamtime application rounds. Monitor and evaluate the science activities of the facility according to overall strategies. Monitor and report on relevant performance metrics as well as research outcomes from the User program. Leadership and management of beamline staff including selection, training, performance management and review, recognition, workforce planning, talent management. Develop and mentor the beamline teams to achieve personal career, Australian Synchrotron, and Nuclear Science and Technology objectives and foster a culture of high performance that encourages innovation, improves productivity and promotes teamwork and collaboration at the Australian Synchrotron.
