Senior Cancer Support Officer – Health Services Section

Job Title: Senior Cancer Support Officer
Location: Tennant Creek and the surrounding Barkly region
Employment Conditions: Full Time Contract, dependent on external funding
Salary: $97,616 – $114,534 per annum (plus $15,899.94 p/a salary packaging and $1,500 p/a career development incentive)
Employment Type: Full Time
Reports to: Clinical Services Manager
Employee Access to Medical Services: Free Prescriptions
Other Benefits: 6 weeks annual leave, up to 10 days of personal/carer's leave per year, free general dentistry, remote retention allowance of $750

About Us

Anyinginyi Health Aboriginal Corporation (Anyinginyi Health) is a multi‑disciplinary organisation which provides primary health care services to the Aboriginal people of Tennant Creek and the surrounding Barkly region, dedicated to ‘Closing the Gap’ in Aboriginal health within remote Australia. Anyinginyi Health is made up of four different sections – Health Services, Corporate Services, Public Health Unit and Piliyintinji‑Ki Stronger Families – which allow them to have a holistic approach to health ensuring that clients’ physical and emotional health and well‑being is given the utmost priority. Anyinginyi Health’s mission is to be a provider of high quality holistic primary health care services featuring prevention and treatment in the Barkly region in a culturally responsive way.

About The Role

The Senior Cancer Support Officer will coordinate the Cancer Research Program and work within a small team providing management and ensuring a community‑based approach to Tennant Creek and the Barkly region. The Senior Cancer Support Officer is responsible for cancer support reporting needs, developing, implementing, and evaluating culturally safe cancer prevention, awareness, and early detection programmes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

Responsibilities

- Maintain appropriate records and prepare reports as required and meeting required timelines.
- Provide practical day‑to‑day support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals, families and communities to navigate health and community support systems throughout their cancer journey.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, families, health providers and support services to ensure culturally appropriate and coordinated cancer care.
- Identify and map relevant stakeholders and services, including cancer specialists, primary health care providers, allied health, and community organisations, to streamline referral pathways.
- Establish and strengthen referral systems to connect clients with the appropriate medical and non‑medical support services across the cancer care continuum.
- Liaise regularly with healthcare teams, including medical, nursing and allied health staff, to support client follow‑up, continuity of care and adherence to treatment plans.
- Lead the planning and delivery of cancer screening awareness activities and community events that encourage early detection and improve screening participation.
- Supervise the process of developing and distributing culturally relevant cancer‑related health promotion materials and communication campaigns in partnership with community stakeholders.
- Promote awareness of national and local cancer awareness events (e.g. awareness days, weeks and months) to encourage community education and engagement.

About You

To be successful in this role, you must be able to demonstrate knowledge of Aboriginal culture and deliver services in a culturally responsive manner. You must be able to create and maintain accurate reports and have experience working in Aboriginal Health Services or similar. Previous experience within Remote Communities is essential.

Essential Skills and Experience

- Qualification or relevant experience in health, community development or project management.
- Experience in planning and running community health promotion programmes, especially in Aboriginal and/or remote areas.
- Ability to deliver culturally safe cancer education and co‑design local health activities.
- Strong skills in engaging with communities and working with health and support services.
- Good understanding of health issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Barkly region.
- Experience creating culturally appropriate health promotion materials across various media platforms.
- Ability to support clients through their cancer journey with coordinated and respectful care.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work both independently and in a team.
- High level of confidentiality and professionalism.
- Able to collect and report data to help improve services.
- Holds a current NT C Class Driver’s Licence and willing to travel to remote communities.

Desirable Skills and Experience

- Experience and knowledge of the Tennant Creek and Barkly Region.
- Familiarity with national cancer screening programmes and related health policies.
