PRIMARY DETAIL

Research Assistant is needed in Department of Biomedical Sciences to work with research staff and clinical trial participants to complete clinical research study activities on dementia risk reduction.

* Salary Package: From $78,954 p.a. (HEW Level 4) plus 17% employer's superannuation and annual leave loading.
* Appointment Type: Full-time, fixed term 12-month appointment with the prospect of continuation
* Macquarie University (Wallumattagal Campus, North Ryde)

The Role

Macquarie University is seeking a Research Assistant to join a team working on a clinical trial which has the aim of slowing or preventing cognitive decline and dementia conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, in a population of people considered at high risk of cognitive decline.

Under supervision from the principal researcher, the key accountabilities of the role include:

* Supporting the conduct of the AU-ARROW study for dementia risk reduction, including assisting with participant clinic visits.
* Completing participant communications, bookings, and follow-ups, including calls to record adverse events and responding to general queries.
* Completing accurate and confidential data entry across study logs, spreadsheets, online case-report forms, and paper-based records.
* Preparing study materials, equipment, and documentation in accordance with approved Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and assisting with study participant meeting logistics such as setting up slides, Zoom sessions, and taking participant blood pressure when required.
* Following training, potentially collecting and processing blood samples for storage in line with approved protocols.
* Providing operational and administrative support to the Clinical Trial Coordinator and other AU-ARROW staff.
* Maintaining compliance with University research ethics, data governance, Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO), and Work Health and Safety (WHS) requirements.

About You

You will be an enthusiastic, adaptable and competent individual who will work under the supervision of the principal researcher and be able to show initiative and anticipate requirements, ensuring that deadlines and objectives are met. You will have outstanding written and verbal communication skills and pay attention to detail. Previous clinical trial experience is not essential but would be a great advantage.

Essential Criteria:

* Degree or equivalent certificate in biological sciences, nursing or related discipline,
* Demonstrated proficiency in MS Office applications and the ability to conduct accurate and efficient web-based research,
* Research experience with an understanding of clinical research, as well as laboratory health and safety practices and principles,
* Outstanding English oral and written communication skills,
* Good interpersonal skills, for communication with participants,
* Knowledge of ICH-Good Clinical Practice guidelines or willing to complete training (free 2-4 hour course),
* Good IT understanding, to be able to answer occasional technology-related questions from participants, and
* Willing to learn data entry procedures, including through REDCap and SharePoint data management systems, as relevant to the study.

Desirable Criteria:

* Some laboratory-based research experience preferred, especially with regard to aseptic techniques.
* Previous experience with older people, for example as trial study participants, or patients, or clients in retail settings.
* Handling confidential participant information and informed consent process.
* Willing to learn human blood processing techniques (aseptic)
* Blood collection experience desirable, or willing to learn blood collection techniques.
