Australian Signals Directorate (ASD)
to engage multiple
Lead Cyber Advisors (EL1 equivalent)
to provide senior cyber security advice, assurance, and leadership across highly sensitive Australian Government environments.
This role is suited to experienced cyber security professionals with strong capability in
risk assessment, system accreditation, security governance, policy development, and stakeholder engagement
, who are comfortable operating in complex, classified environments.

Role Overview
As a
Lead Cyber Advisor
, you will provide
authoritative ICT security advice and assurance
across government systems and programs. You will operate at a senior level, supporting accreditation activities, cyber risk management, policy and practice development, and complex stakeholder engagement.
The role carries accountability for:
* Certification and validation of systems
* High-quality cyber security reporting
* Investigation and assessment of cyber threats and incidents
* Influencing improvements to organisational cyber security posture
You will work closely with technical specialists, senior executives, and external stakeholders, translating complex cyber security information into clear, actionable advice.
ASD is engaging multiple EL1-equivalent professionals to fill current operational needs and to establish a
merit pool
for potential future requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Cyber Security Assurance & Accreditation
* Be accountable for the
certification or validation of systems
to support security accreditations
* Collect, analyse, and interpret cyber and information security data to support assurance decisions
* Ensure systems and practices align with relevant security frameworks, standards, and legislative requirements
Reporting & Advisory Leadership
* Produce and maintain
high-quality cyber and information security reporting
, including:
* Detection and response statistics
* Security incidents and breaches
* Risk assessments and assurance documentation
* Formal correspondence and executive briefings
* Provide authoritative advice to senior stakeholders on cyber security risks and mitigation strategies
Threat & Incident Analysis
* Investigate, analyse, and assess
cyber security incidents, breaches, and threats
* Identify vulnerabilities and forecast potential threat vectors
* Recommend practical and proportionate mitigation strategies
Policy, Governance & Practice Development
* Research and analyse complex cyber security data and activities to drive improvements in security posture
* Contribute to the development of cyber security
policies, practices, principles, and doctrine
* Establish, assess, and review cyber security practices and procedures to ensure compliance with legislation, standards, and guidelines
Stakeholder Engagement & Representation
* Translate and explain
complex cyber security matters
to technical and non-technical audiences
* Build and sustain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders
* Represent cyber security positions at domestic and international forums as required
Leadership & Continuous Improvement
* Motivate, mentor, and support team members, aligning skills and allocating resources effectively
* Evaluate business practices and objectives to identify opportunities for continuous improvement
* Apply innovative research techniques to identify emerging risks and uplift security maturity
Essential Skills & Experience
To be successful in this role, you will demonstrate:
* Strong experience planning, managing, and executing
vulnerability assessments and/or cyber risk assessments
* Proven ability to research cyber security tools, techniques, and methodologies
* Experience translating complex technical cyber security data into
clear, business-level reporting
* Demonstrated experience investigating and analysing
cyber security incidents, breaches, or threats
* Experience developing and maintaining
cyber security or information security practices, procedures, standards, and guidelines
* Strong written and verbal communication skills, including engagement with senior executives
* Ability to operate autonomously in complex, high-assurance environments
Desirable Qualifications
* IRAP Assessor certification
(highly desirable)
* Other recognised cyber security or information security certifications will be well regarded
Security & Eligibility Requirements (Mandatory)
Due to the sensitive nature of ASD's work, candidates
must
meet the following requirements:
* Current NV2 or TSPV security clearance
* Australian Citizenship
* Willingness to successfully complete
ASD's Organisational Suitability Assessment (OSA)
* Ability to work
primarily onsite
(work-from-home arrangements are subject to operational requirements)
Candidates without the appropriate clearance or eligibility will not be considered.
