Together, we are building a brighter future.About your new Role: This is a newly created senior leadership position reporting directly to the COO, designed to lift the maturity of operational risk across Brighter Super's Operations division, the largest team in the fund.
As Head of Operational Risk (Line 1), you will be the dedicated risk lead for Operations, shaping the division's approach to risk management at a pivotal time for the fund.
You will work closely with Line 2 colleagues in the Chief Risk Office to ensure effective risk management across Brighter Super, guiding and influencing Operations management and team members.This is a high-impact opportunity to step into a hands-on yet strategic role, building capability, influencing senior stakeholders, and right-sizing risk practices to match the scale and complexity of a growing fund.This role can be based in either Brisbane or Sydney .
In this role, you willPartner with senior leaders across Operations (contact centre, back-office administration, and material service providers) to embed effective first-line risk practices.Analyse incident trends and operational risks, providing practical solutions and supporting resolution.Constructively challenge and influence business decisions to ensure risk-based insights support sound decision making and that operational risks are managed effectively.Contribute to key change initiatives, regulatory programs, and the ongoing evolution of Brighter Super's operating model.Provide pragmatic risk advice, training, education, and support, including risk assessments, control testing, reviews, and project management input.Collaborate with Operations leaders to define risks, controls, and action plans.Assist with operational incidents and escalations where appropriate.Advise on projects and broader change initiatives to ensure risk is appropriately considered.About YouYou're an experienced risk professional with a proven track record in operational risk management, ideally gained within the superannuation sector.
Alternatively, you may have worked in financial services or wealth management and can quickly translate your expertise into a superannuation context.
You understand the regulatory environment (APRA, SIS Act, Corporations Act, and RSE licence conditions) and can apply this knowledge pragmatically to day-to-day operations.With 7-10 years of experience in complex operational environments, you've successfully embedded first-line risk practices, advised operational leaders, and managed operational incidents.
You know how to balance strong risk management with commercial outcomes and can tailor ("right-size") risk frameworks to fit the needs of the organisation.You bringSuperannuation or financial services expertise, with a strong understanding of operational processes such as member transactions, contact centre operations, and back-office administration.A history of partnering with senior leaders, with the presence and confidence to influence decision-making and challenge assumptions.Practical, hands-on experience in risk assessments, incident management, control testing, and governance processes.Experience supporting large-scale change initiatives and/or regulatory uplift programs.Knowledge of CPS 230 and the ability to apply this to supplier governance and material service provider management.A collaborative leadership style: you build strong peer relationships, engage confidently with the SLT, and empower others by sharing knowledge, mentoring, and drawing on expertise across the business.Exceptional relationship management and interpersonal skills: decisive, socially astute, an excellent communicator and listener, with integrity, accountability, and trustworthiness at the core of your approach.Personal qualities that set you apart: resilience, self-sufficiency, and commercial pragmatism, you see risk management not just as compliance, but as an enabler of smarter business decisions.Why choose Brighter SuperWe pride ourselves on being a great place to work, where you matter
