Legal Counsel - Consumer & Business Banking Lawyer
Opportunity for a financial services lawyer with strong consumer and business banking experience and a commercial generalist skill set to join a bank with strong values and a purpose-led culture, as it enters an exciting new phase of growth and evolution.
About the Role:
This is a high-impact role for an experienced lawyer ready to provide legal guidance across the full spectrum of banking and corporate operations. Reporting to the Chief Legal Officer and working within a respected and collaborative legal team, you will be instrumental in driving the organisation's compliance, governance and risk posture while enabling strategic and operational goals.
This role is ideal for a commercially minded lawyer with broad in-house financial services experience, ready to navigate enterprise-wide legal issues—from mergers and employment law to IP/IT procurement and company secretarial matters.
Key Responsibilities:
* Provide clear, commercially focused legal advice across banking, corporate, and financial services matters
* Lead contract negotiation and management, including SLAs, supplier arrangements, finance agreements and corporate initiatives
* Navigate a complex regulatory landscape and ensure compliance with the Corporations Act, Banking Act and relevant ASIC/APRA regimes
* Support board and governance functions, including advice on director duties, conflicts of interest and statutory reporting
* Collaborate with business units on risk management and dispute resolution strategies
* Foster strong stakeholder engagement across senior leadership, regulators and external counsel
Requirements & Experience:
* Admitted solicitor in NSW with at least 3–7 years' post-qualification experience in financial services, banking or corporate law
* Expertise in consumer and retail banking law, with an ability to manage a broad portfolio of legal issues (including employment, IP/IT procurement and governance)
* Proven stakeholder management skills and the ability to influence at executive and board level
* A collaborative, pragmatic and commercially minded approach to legal problem-solving
* Familiarity with customer-owned institutions will be well regarded
