About Us

The Gimuy Walubara Yidinji Elders Aboriginal Corporation (GWYEAC) is the recognised Tribal Authority for the Cairns region, representing the rights and responsibilities of the Gimuy Walubara Yidinji people under Tribal Law. Established in 2019, GWYEAC is an Indigenous-led, not-for-profit organisation dedicated to caring for Country, preserving culture, and empowering community through self-determined action.

Guided by the Gimuy Rule Book, all work is carried out following Tribal Law, cultural protocols, and Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK). This includes the protection and management of Country from ridges to reef, ensuring the health of land, waterways, and Sea Country for current and future generations.

GWYEAC leads the Gimuy Ranger Program, a culturally governed initiative that combines cultural authority with contemporary environmental science to restore ecosystems, safeguard cultural heritage, and strengthen climate resilience. Rangers operate under the guidance of Elders, working to uphold cultural safety, respect sacred sites, and follow the protocols set by the Rule Book.

In addition to environmental management, the Corporation delivers cultural services — including Welcome to Country, smoking ceremonies, Yidinji dance, bush food harvesting, cultural education, and heritage monitoring — supporting intergenerational knowledge transfer and strengthening community understanding of Yidinji identity.

Through strong partnerships with government, research institutions, and community organisations, GWYEAC advances Indigenous land management, language revival, and sustainable development across Gimuy Country.

About You

You will develop your practical skills while on duty by working closely with the Elders, Senior Rangers and Ranger Coordinator, following instructions and contributing team goals. This includes hands‑on learning, formal training, attending workshops and forums, and participating in cultural teaching guided by Elders.

The role offers the opportunity to gain recognised qualifications, build expertise in environmental and cultural management, and grow into a valued member of the Ranger team.

Position Summary

As a Ranger with the Gimuy Walubara Yidinji Elders Aboriginal Corporation, you will play a key role in protecting and caring for Country — from ridges to reef — through the delivery of the Gimuy Catchment Management Plan and the Gimuy Strategic Plan. Working under the guidance of Elders, the Senior Rangers, and the Ranger Coordinator, you will help manage land, water, and Sea Country by combining Traditional Ecological Knowledge with environmental best practice.

Your work will include environmental monitoring, cultural heritage protection, and community engagement, ensuring that the landscapes, waterways, and cultural sites of Gimuy are respected and preserved for future generations. This role offers the chance to grow your skills through on‑the‑job learning, cultural teaching and formal training, while contributing to meaningful projects that make a lasting impact.

Local Indigenous people are encouraged to apply, with preference given to Gimuy Walubara Yidinji applicants.
