About the Role
The Database Administrator will play a critical role in maintaining the stability, performance, and security of Bluestaq’s infrastructure across defence‑aligned environments. Reporting directly to the President of Bluestaq Australia, this role is evenly split between database and systems administration—managing PostgreSQL and MongoDB databases, optimizing performance, and overseeing Windows and Linux servers to ensure secure, compliant, and high‑performing operations. The ideal candidate is a hands‑on technical expert with strong problem‑solving skills, a proactive mindset, and the ability to support mission‑critical systems in complex environments.
Responsibilities
Database Administration (50%)
- Monitor database performance and optimize queries, indexes, and database configurations
- Perform regular database backups, recovery procedures, and disaster recovery planning
- Maintain database security policies, access controls, and compliance standards
- Plan and execute database upgrades, patches, and migrations
- Troubleshoot database issues and provide technical support to development teams
- Create and maintain database documentation and schemas
Systems Administration (50%)
- Manage and maintain Windows and Linux server environments
- Monitor system performance, disk space, and resource utilization
- Install, configure, and maintain server hardware and virtualization platforms (VMware, Hyper‑V)
- Manage backup and disaster recovery solutions
- Administer IdM, user accounts, permissions, and group policies
- Maintain network infrastructure including firewalls, and Kubernetes
- Apply security patches and updates to operating systems and applications
- Respond to system incidents and perform root cause analysis

Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field (or equivalent experience)
- 5+ years of experience in database administration and systems administration
- Strong expertise with relational database systems (PostgreSQL)
- Experience with NoSQL databases (MongoDB)
- Proficiency in Windows Server and Linux administration
- Experience with virtualization technologies (VMware, Hyper‑V)
- Knowledge of backup/recovery solutions and disaster recovery planning
- Strong understanding of network protocols, security, and best practices
- Experience with scripting languages (PowerShell, Bash, Python)
- Excellent troubleshooting and problem‑solving skills
- Willingness to travel within Australia to customer and partner locations, including secure government or defence sites, and occasional travel to Bluestaq offices in the United States for collaboration or project work
- You must also be an Australian citizen, eligible to obtain and maintain an Australian Government NV2 security clearance
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud)
- Knowledge of configuration management tools (Ansible, Puppet, Chef)
- Familiarity with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes)
- Experience with monitoring tools (Splunk)
- Understanding of DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines
