A well-established and growing organisation based in Melbourne's South Eastern suburbs is seeking an experienced, commercially astute and hands‐on Senior Accountant / Finance Manager to lead its finance function.
This is a pivotal senior leadership role for a high‐calibre finance professional who brings both strong technical capability and practical commercial judgement. While the scope of the role is broad and influential, it is best suited to someone who prefers to remain close to the numbers, the operations, and the day‐to‐day running of the business rather than operate in a purely corporate or board‐level capacity.
Working closely with senior leadership, you will take ownership of the finance function, provide clear and timely reporting, support strategic and operational decision‐making, and help ensure the business is well positioned for continued growth.
The organisation operates in a commercially active environment and this role will suit someone who has previously worked in a similar setting, ideally involving multiple suppliers, purchasing activity, operational complexity, and product or distribution‐based workflows.
Key responsibilities
Lead and manage the day‐to‐day finance function
Prepare monthly management accounts, board‐style reporting, and financial analysis
Manage budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow planning
Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger processes
Monitor margins, operating costs, supplier payments, and working capital performance
Manage month‐end and year‐end close processes
Liaise with external accountants, auditors, banks, and other professional advisors
Partner with senior leadership to provide commercially relevant insights and recommendations
Review and improve financial controls, reporting processes, and system efficiency
Work closely with operational stakeholders on purchasing, supplier accounts, inventory‐related transactions, and overall business performance
Contribute to business planning and financial discipline across the organisation
Candidate profile
To be successful in this role, you will be a proven senior finance professional with the maturity, judgement and capability to operate as the most senior hands‐on finance leader within the business.
You will ideally bring:
Proven experience in a Senior Accountant, Finance Manager or comparable senior finance role
Experience within a similar commercial environment, ideally involving multiple suppliers, purchasing flows, stock/inventory, wholesale, distribution, or product‐based operations
Strong technical capability across financial reporting, management accounting, budgeting, and cash flow management
A hands‐on and proactive working style
Well‐developed commercial acumen and the ability to support practical business decisions
Strong attention to detail, accountability, and process discipline
The confidence to engage effectively with internal stakeholders and external advisors
