About the Role
The Solicitor in the Legislation team will work closely with the Managing Principal Solicitors to provide legislation services to the department. You will assist in delivering legal and legislative advice on a broad range of matters across the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing.
The Legislation team supports policy development and provides legislation services to implement the department's legislation program. You will collaborate with policy areas and legal teams to deliver legal policy reform, including developing policies, legislation, and subordinate legislation related to the department's portfolios.
You may also support legal advice and services across the Public Law, Litigation, and Inquiries team, including advising on legal issues, statutory interpretation, and administrative law matters. Responsibilities include managing sensitive litigation such as coronial inquiries, matters under the Crimes (Mental Impairment and Unfitness to be Tried) Act 1997, Hague Convention cases, discrimination complaints, and personal injury matters.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide advice on complex legal, legislative, and policy issues, including high-level briefings and correspondence.
* Work with departmental colleagues to deliver high-quality, client-focused legal and legislative services on sensitive matters.
* Prepare briefs and instruct counsel and solicitors on complex issues.
