Recruitmark is partnered with a specialist modular infrastructure provider delivering data centres and other mission‐critical facilities for hyperscale, colocation, and enterprise clients. Through its integrated Design, Engineer, Supply (DES) model, the business bridges the gap between engineering design and material delivery, ensuring projects are delivered efficiently, on time, and on budget. Supporting some of the region's most complex digital infrastructure projects, the company is recognised for its innovative, high‐performance modular solutions.
About the Role:
The Design Director is responsible for leading the end‐to‐end design and engineering function, defining the technical direction across all modular data centre solutions. This senior leadership role ensures all designs are innovative, compliant, commercially viable, and aligned with both client expectations and delivery requirements.
Partnering closely with senior leadership and key client stakeholders, the role oversees projects from early concept through to construction‐ready design. It plays a critical role in managing technical risk, driving consistency across product platforms, and embedding strong engineering standards and culture across the business.
Key Responsibilities:
* Define and lead the overall design strategy and engineering direction across modular data centres and associated critical infrastructure, ensuring alignment with client needs, buildability, and commercial outcomes.
* Oversee multi‐disciplinary engineering teams across electrical, mechanical, structural, civil, fire, controls, and BMS, ensuring seamless coordination and effective resolution of technical interfaces.
* Establish and enforce robust technical governance, including compliance with Australian standards, structured design reviews, risk management, and formal approval gateways across all project stages.
* Drive product standardisation and modularisation, developing repeatable design solutions, component libraries, and BOMs to improve efficiency, reduce cost, and enhance scalability.
* Act as the senior technical authority in client engagement, supporting bids, workshops, and technical submissions while providing credible engineering leadership during pre‐contract stages.
* Lead end‐to‐end design delivery across projects, including programme ownership, design freeze management, change control, and alignment with construction and manufacturing timelines.
* Champion innovation and team capability development by identifying emerging technologies, driving R&D initiatives, and fostering a high‐performance, accountable engineering culture.
About You:
* Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, with postgraduate qualifications in engineering management or critical infrastructure highly regarded.
* Chartered Engineer status (CPEng, NER, RPEQ or international equivalent) preferred but not essential.
* Minimum 15 years' engineering experience in mission‐critical infrastructure, including at least 7 years in senior design or engineering leadership roles.
* Proven experience leading multi‐disciplinary design teams on large‐scale projects ($20M+).
* Strong background in data centre design aligned to Uptime Institute or hyperscale operator standards.
* Solid technical knowledge of Australian standards, the National Construction Code, and key data centre systems including power, cooling, UPS, BMS, and controls.
* Strong leadership and communication capability, with the ability to manage technical complexity, engage senior stakeholders, and develop high‐performing engineering teams.
**Applicants must be Australian/New Zealand citizens or have Permanent Residency.**
