About the role
Enerven is seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Primary Engineer to join our high-performing Engineering Design Team out of our Adelaide office. In this pivotal role, you will play a key part in delivering complex high voltage substations, Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), and renewable energy infrastructure projects that are critical to Australia’s energy future.
Enerven is currently leading major projects across Australia – from the large-scale Bungama Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Adelaide, to the 2.8GWh Eraring BESS in New South Wales, and the 500kV Goulburn River Solar Farm connection. Key Responsibilities
As a Senior Primary Engineer, you will be responsible for the development and delivery of comprehensive design packages and technical reports, including but not limited to:
* Site Layouts & Elevations: Develop equipment layout plans, constraint mapping, and earth grid designs.
* Trenching & Cabling: Prepare conduit routing plans, cable schedules, block diagrams, and ensure appropriate separation for fibre, fire, and security systems.
* Lighting & Ancillary Systems: Design lighting systems including lux contour plots and pole specifications, along with lightning protection solutions.
* Engineering Analysis & Technical Reports: Conduct studies including but not limited to; short‑circuit force analysis, lightning protection, fire and acoustic assessments, conductor sizing, sag and tension calculations, clearance verification, and oil containment planning.
* Site Mobilisation Planning: Design layouts for laydown areas, access routes, and temporary services required for site establishment.
* Technical Leadership: Provide guidance and mentorship to junior engineers, supporting skill development and ensuring high-quality project outcomes.
* Advanced Engineering Delivery: Apply expert knowledge to deliver practical, high-performance primary engineering solutions for complex, high‑voltage systems.
Please note - This role will require relocation, and assistance will be provided.
About you
We’re seeking someone with proven, comprehensive experience working with high‑voltage systems ranging from 33kV up to 500kV. The ideal candidate will bring strong technical expertise, a collaborative mindset, and a desire to progressively grow into a principal leadership role.
This includes:
* Contributing across all project phases - from concept design and Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) to Issued for Construction (IFC), construction support, and commissioning.
* Liaising effectively with clients, OEMs, and construction teams to ensure practical, standards‑compliant design outcomes.
* Supporting continuous improvement through the development of design tools, templates, and discipline best practices.
What you bring:
* Degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent), eligible for membership or already a member with Engineers Australia (CPEng desirable)
* Minimum 5 years’ experience in HV substations is essential (A background in BESS / Renewables is also advantageous)
* Minimum of 2 years’ experience mentoring engineers and supporting technical development within a team environment.
* Strong knowledge of relevant Australian Standards (e.g. AS2067, AS/NZS 7000, AS1768).
* Proficiency in AutoCAD and/or MicroStation (Revit, 3D or BIM experience is a plus).
* Experience working in dedicated software packages for Earthing, Lightning, Lighting, Insulation Co‑Ordination and the like is advantageous (CDEGs, PSCADD, AGI32 etc).
* Excellent technical report writing and communication skills.
* Collaborative, curious mindset with a commitment to quality design.
* Current SA driver’s license.
* Experience aligned with grade‑level competencies.
