Offer description

Director, Technical & Environmental Review

Export Finance Australia (EFA) is Australia’s export credit agency. For almost 70 years, EFA has helped Australian businesses grow and succeed internationally with finance to secure opportunities, expand into new markets and diversify their presence. We support critical minerals and defence sectors, finance projects that strengthen economic resilience and advance net zero, and back Australian investment in sustainable infrastructure.

Working with banks, other Government agencies and international partners, we back Australia’s exporters, supply chain businesses and industries, contributing to a more stable and prosperous Indo‑Pacific while advancing Australia’s trade, investment and economic security objectives.

Our business continues to grow so we are seeking to appoint a Director to our Technical and Environmental Review team.

Purpose of the role

The Director, Technical and Environmental Review provides expert guidance and oversight of all technical, environmental and social due diligence that supports EFA’s mandate, lending and portfolio management decisions. The role ensures that proposed transactions are technically viable, environmentally compliant and commercially sound and aligned with EFA’s risk‑management framework, sustainability commitments and regulatory obligations.

Location: Sydney preferred. Role Type: Full‑time, Permanent.

* Identify and assess all key risks – project, environmental, social, operational and contractual – to protect EFA’s credit quality.
* Conduct due diligence including site visits to evaluate technical, operational, environmental and social risks and provide detailed formal risk assessments; advise the Lending and Portfolio Management teams of the findings.
* Advise lending and portfolio management teams on loan and contract documentation as it impacts on Technical, Environmental and Social (TES) risk and provide a risk assessment for the project or transaction.
* Assess technical risks such as exporter capability and contract performance and monitor compliance with transaction requirements.
* Monitor completion, operational and environmental risks and the potential risk to EFA via project review reports, working with the Portfolio Management team and, when required, site visits.
* Assess environmental and social risks to ensure alignment with EFA policies and mandates and represent EFA in relevant international, Board and Government forums.
* Contribute to the organisational strategy by improving customer experience and supporting better outcomes for EFA.
* Participate in the loan approvals process and assist in monitoring transaction performance.

About you

* A minimum of 10 years’ experience in a similar role with international business operations or major projects – experience in mining and critical minerals is highly desirable.
* A strong understanding of Technical, Environmental and Social risks (particular expertise in Technical risk will be viewed favourably) and a good understanding of factors that influence an organisation’s risk policy, procedures and mitigations.
* Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills; experienced presenting to senior management and Boards.
* Strong negotiation and influencing skills, particularly in Technical, Environmental and Social requirements for Credit discussions, deal structuring and managing complex client relationships.
* Degree qualified ideally in Mining or Engineering.
* Domestic and International travel will be required to conduct site visits.
