Dawn House is seeking a skilled and self-directed Community Educatorto expand our community education work across Darwin and the Top End. This is a stand‐alone role suited to someone who is confident working independently, building relationships, delivering engaging education sessions and representing Dawn House with professionalism, warmth and integrity.
About Dawn House
Dawn House has been supporting women and children escaping domestic and family violence since 1980. We provide emergency accommodation, outreach support, advocacy and community education from a feminist, strengths-based and trauma-informed perspective.
Dawn House is a service run by women, for women and children, and is committed to social justice, dignity, safety, self-determination and the pursuit of a community free from domestic and family violence.
About the Role
The Community Educator designs, coordinates and delivers domestic and family violence education and training for government, non-government, community and professional audiences.
The role aims to increase the community's ability to identify, understand and appropriately respond to domestic and family violence through education, awareness raising, stakeholder engagement and community development activities.
This position will also coordinate and support the Darwin Domestic and Family Violence Network and contribute to local prevention campaigns, community education strategies and awareness raising activities across the greater Darwin region and the Top End.
Key responsibilities include:
* Developing and delivering engaging domestic and family violence education and training sessions.
* Tailoring workshops, seminars and information sessions for professionals, organisations and community groups.
* Facilitating interactive, informative and trauma-informed education sessions.
* Coordinating and supporting the Darwin Domestic and Family Violence Network.
* Building and maintaining relationships with community services, government agencies, Aboriginal community-controlled organisations and other stakeholders.
* Participating in awareness raising activities and campaigns to reduce the incidence of domestic and family violence.
* Maintaining accurate records, data and reports for service delivery, funding and organisational reporting.
* Working in accordance with Dawn House policies, confidentiality requirements, mandatory reporting obligations and work health and safety requirements.
Education sessions may cover themes including:
* What is domestic and family violence?
* The cycle of violence.
* Barriers to identifying and leaving abusive relationships.
* The impacts of domestic and family violence.
* Respectful and appropriate responses to disclosures.
* Myths and misconceptions about domestic and family violence.
* Referral pathways and coordinated community responses.
About You
We are looking for an experienced, passionate and confident facilitator who can work independently and engage respectfully with diverse community, government and non-government stakeholders.
To be successful in this role, you will have:
* A clear understanding of domestic and family violence theory and practice, including feminist frameworks and a gendered understanding of violence.
* Demonstrated experience developing and delivering education, training, workshops or community awareness sessions.
* Confidence in group facilitation and the ability to engage diverse audiences.
* Knowledge of adult learning principles, community development models and prevention approaches.
* Strong communication, interpersonal and stakeholder engagement skills.
* Demonstrated ability to work respectfully with people from diverse socio‐economic, cultural, religious, sexual and political backgrounds.
* Experience building and maintaining professional networks, partnerships and stakeholder relationships.
* Strong written communication skills, including the ability to prepare reports, resources, meeting records and service information.
* Understanding of confidentiality, privacy, trauma-informed practice, cultural safety, child safety and mandatory reporting obligations.
* A practical, organised and self‐directed working style.
* Ability to travel across the Top End of the Northern Territory.
Essential Requirements
Applicants must have:
* Minimum 1–2 years' experience in domestic and family violence, family violence, community education, community development or a related field.
* Minimum 1–2 years' group facilitation experience.
* A degree with substantial relevant experience, postgraduate qualification, associate diploma with substantial relevant experience, or demonstrated equivalent knowledge, skills and experience.
* Current Northern Territory Driver Licence.
* Current or ability to obtain a Northern Territory Police Clearance.
* Current or ability to obtain a Working with Children Clearance, also known as an Ochre Card.
