Job Description
Inova Bus Services The Automotive Electrician will be responsible for installing, maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing electrical and electronic systems in buses and commercial passenger vehicles. This is a hands-on technical role requiring strong diagnostic skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work with modern automotive electrical systems, vehicle wiring, and electronic control components in a commercial vehicle environment.
The Automotive Electrician will perform electrical installation work in support of bus seat installations, ensuring all seat-mounted electrical components (including USB charging ports, reading lights, passenger information systems, and seatbelt sensors) are correctly wired, tested, and commissioned to Australian automotive electrical standards and manufacturer specifications. Benefits Task & responsibilities Duties: Install electrical wiring, circuits, and electronic components in buses and commercial passenger vehicles, including seat-mounted USB ports, reading lights, passenger call buttons, seatbelt sensors, and passenger information systems. Route, secure, and protect electrical cables and wiring harnesses through bus chassis, floor cavities, seat frames, and overhead panels in accordance with automotive wiring standards and ADR.
Diagnose electrical and electronic faults using electrical test equipment including multimeters, circuit testers, oscilloscopes, and diagnostic scan tools. Interpret electrical circuit diagrams, wiring schematics, and manufacturer technical specifications to identify faults and determine correct repair procedures. Repair or replace faulty electrical components including alternators, starter motors, voltage regulators, relays, switches, sensors, wiring harnesses, and connectors.
Test and maintain vehicle lighting systems (headlights, tail lights, brake lights, indicator lights, interior lighting) to ensure compliance with ADR. Install, configure, and test aftermarket electronic accessories including GPS tracking systems, reversing cameras, dash cameras, telematics systems, and fleet management devices. Adjust and calibrate engine control systems, fuel injection systems, and emissions control systems using diagnostic equipment and manufacturer specifications.
Perform scheduled electrical system inspections and preventive maintenance, including battery and alternator testing. Complete accurate job cards, electrical test reports, and service records documenting all work performed, components replaced, and test results, ensuring compliance with WHS regulations and ADR standards. Responsibilities: Ensure all electrical installation, testing, fault diagnosis, and repair work meets ADR, relevant Australian Standards, and manufacturer specifications.
Maintain personal responsibility for safe work practices, including electrical isolation, lockout/tagout procedures, and safe use of electrical test equipment. Take responsibility for the quality, accuracy, and safety of all electrical work performed, including correct cable sizing, circuit protection, and earthing. Communicate proactively with the Workshop Manager and seat installation technicians regarding work progress, parts requirements, and any issues, completing accurate and timely documentation Qualification & experience Trade qualification in Automotive Electrical Technology or equivalent; OR at least three (3) years of relevant full-time experience in the automotive electrician trade in lieu of formal qualifications.
Minimum one (1) year of full-time post-qualification experience as an Automotive Electrician, performing installation, maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of electrical wiring and electronic components in motor vehicles. Practical experience using electrical test equipment (multimeters, circuit testers, diagnostic scan tools, oscilloscopes). Knowledge of vehicle electrical systems including wiring, lighting, alternators, starter motors, battery systems, and electronic control modules.
Ability to read and interpret electrical diagrams, wiring schematics, and manufacturer technical specifications. Current driver’s licence (car minimum; LR/MR truck licence desirable). Understanding of Australian WHS obligations and safe electrical work practices.
Desirable: Experience with bus, coach, or heavy commercial vehicle electrical systems. Experience installing electrical components and wiring harnesses in vehicle modifications, refurbishments, or fitouts. Familiarity with ADR for vehicle lighting, electrical systems, and safety equipment.
Electrical worker licence or restricted electrical licence (state/territory-specific). Experience using automotive diagnostic software and scan tools for fault retrieval and ECU diagnostics.
