Senior Environmental Assessments Officer
Grade: 9/10
Salary range: $129,464-$142,665 + superannuation and leave loading
Duration: temporary full time role for up to 12 months
Location: Hybrid with an in-office requirement 2 days a week in Sydney, Gosford or Bathurst. This may be subject to change in line with DCS workplace policies
Enable responsible delivery of mission‐critical telecommunications infrastructure across NSW.
We are seeking an experienced environmental professional to provide specialist environmental assessment, advice and assurance, supporting the planning and delivery of NSW Telco Authority's infrastructure and operational activities while ensuring strong environmental and regulatory outcomes.
About the team
This role sits within the Strategy, Commercial & Risk Division of NSW Telco Authority.
The Environment team provides specialist leadership, advice and governance across environmental management, climate resilience and Net Zero priorities. The team supports delivery by setting clear environmental frameworks, providing practical guidance to project teams, and ensuring compliance with statutory, policy and whole‐of‐government requirements.
This includes environmental assessments and approvals, on‐ground environmental management, and organisation‐wide initiatives relating to sustainability, climate disclosures and resilience. The team works closely with project managers, engineers, delivery partners and other government agencies to embed environmental considerations early and consistently, balancing delivery objectives with responsible environmental stewardship.
Your responsibilities will include
* Leading the preparation, review and endorsement of environmental planning documentation, including Reviews of Environmental Factors (REFs) and site environmental plans
* Providing specialist advice on environmental planning legislation, approvals and policy requirements to support risk‐informed decision‐making
* Working in partnership with project managers, engineers and technical specialists to integrate environmental requirements into project planning, sequencing and delivery
* Critically reviewing consultant reports and technical assessments to ensure quality, robustness and fitness for purpose
* Identifying, assessing and managing environmental risks, incidents and potential non‐compliance, recommending practical and proportionate solutions
* Coordinating inspections, audits, monitoring and reporting to provide assurance of compliance and support regulatory and executive reporting
* Supporting and enhancing environmental, sustainability and governance frameworks, tools and processes, and building organisational capability through guidance and knowledge sharing

To be successful in this role you will have
* Tertiary qualifications in environmental science, environmental management, planning or a related discipline
* Strong working knowledge of NSW environmental planning and assessment legislation and its practical application
* Demonstrated experience preparing, reviewing or managing environmental assessments and approvals
* Ability to provide clear, practical and defensible advice to project teams and stakeholders
* Well‐developed written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex environmental issues clearly
* A current Class C driver licence and willingness to travel across NSW, including undertaking 4WD training if required
Nice to have:
* Experience working in infrastructure, utilities or telecommunications environments
* Exposure to sustainability, climate resilience or Net Zero‐related initiatives
* Experience working within or alongside government, regulators or complex delivery organisations
* Experience reviewing consultant deliverables and coordinating environmental inputs across multiple projects or initiatives
