Café Cook & Barista – Monday to Friday (Day Shifts, Port Melbourne)
Join our café in Port Melbourne as an Independent Cook, where you’ll take full ownership of the kitchen and daily food preparation. This role is ideal for someone confident and self-driven, who enjoys working without supervision and managing all aspects of cooking on their own. We are especially looking for someone experienced in vegan and vegetarian cuisine, able to bring creativity and quality to our café menu while maintaining consistency and great presentation.
Position Details
- Job Title: Cook – Café (Vegan & Vegetarian Specialist)
- Employment Type: Full-time (Monday to Friday)
- Hours: 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM
- Location: Port Melbourne
- Salary: $70,000 – $80,000 per annum (depending on experience)
Key Responsibilities
- Independently manage day-to-day kitchen operations in the café
- Prepare and cook a variety of menu items, with a strong focus on vegan and vegetarian dishes
- Create and serve high-quality meals, including:
- Plant-based Italian-style dishes (e.g., lasagna, pasta, etc.)
- Fresh sandwiches, wraps, acai bowls, smoothies, and paninis
- Coffee and hot beverages (barista skills required)
- Operate a sandwich bar and coffee bar to maintain service flow
- Provide excellent customer service, including taking orders and table service when required
- Maintain food quality, presentation, and consistency
- Manage stock levels, order supplies, and prepare ingredients as needed
- Ensure cleanliness and hygiene standards in both front and back of house
- Support smooth day-to-day café operations as needed
- Prepare a wide range of café beverages including specialty teas, hot chocolates, and super lattes (e.g., turmeric, matcha, mushroom blends, golden milk, and other health-focused lattes).
- Create high-quality drinks consistent with café standards (coffee, teas, smoothies, superfood lattes).
- Ensure menu consistency by following recipes for specialty items such as Bunny-cino, Babyccino, Affogato, and Chai.
Requirements
- Proven experience as a Cook/Chef in a café or restaurant, with strong vegan and vegetarian cooking skills
- Ability to design and prepare plant-based menu options that are appealing and nutritious
- Barista skills and experience operating a commercial coffee machine
- Ability to work independently without supervision
- Excellent time management and organizational skills
- Commitment to food hygiene, safety, and cleanliness
