Rock Spring Contracting, a commercial construction contractor headquartered in Kensington, Maryland, is seeking a Purchasing Estimator to join our team.
As a Purchasing Estimator, you will play a key role in supporting our Project Management team by ensuring accurate material budgets for commercial construction projects.
Position Summary
The Purchasing Estimator works within the Purchasing Department at Rock Spring Contracting.
This role is responsible for reviewing material take-offs and project budgets after jobs are awarded, ensuring material budgets are detailed, accurate, and aligned with actual project requirements.
The Purchasing Estimator will act as a key liaison between the estimating, purchasing, and project management teams to confirm all materials are accurately scoped and sourced at the best value, supporting successful project execution.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Review material take-offs after the bidding phase to verify that all required materials are accurately captured and quantified for awarded projects.
Assess budgets and material lists to ensure pricing, quantities, and specifications align with project requirements and anticipated market costs before purchase orders are issued.
Identify budget discrepancies, potential cost savings, or scope gaps, and report findings to project management and the Purchasing team for corrective action.
Collaborate with Project Managers and Estimators to update material lists based on revised plans, bulletins, or scope changes after project award.
Liaise with suppliers to confirm material pricing, availability, and lead times, securing updated quotes and recommendations as needed.
Provide detailed material cost breakdowns to support project cost tracking and reporting.
Participate in project handoff meetings, sharing insights on material requirements, possible risks, and budget controls.
Stay current on material pricing trends and potential supply chain issues that could impact project costs.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Previous experience in estimating, purchasing, or related construction roles required.
Experience with materials take-offs and cost analysis required.
Strong analytical skills and a keen attention to detail.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills for reporting and coordination across departments.
Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel), and capable of adapting to project management and estimating software.
Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
Bilingual English/Spanish but not required.
Physical and Environmental Requirements
Primarily indoor office environment with occasional visits to project sites; occasional lifting; frequent use of hands and fingers for typing, keyboarding, and operating office equipment.
Frequent use of computers and standard office equipment.
Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
Ability to consistently be at the office (Kensington, MD) in-person 5 days a week from 8am-4pm.
Compensation Package
Range: $80,000 to $90,000 annual salary depending on experience and qualifications.
